Demand for Smart Services Rising Across Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia

Doha, Qatar: Ooredoo will showcase a range of “smart” technologies at this year’s GSMA Mobile World Congress, as the company continues to develop new life-enhancing services to serve customers across its footprint.

The theme of this year’s Congress is “The Edge of Innovation,” and Ooredoo will demonstrate how it supports its customers’ digital lifestyle through innovation and new thinking.

A number of new services will be on display at the Ooredoo Pavilion, including four sections dedicated to smart technologies: Smart City; Machine-to-Machine (M2M); Smart Education and Smart Stadium technology.

Dr. Nasser Marafih, Group CEO, Ooredoo, said: “Ooredoo’s smart solutions offer the potential for us to transform the lives of our customers, by reducing energy usage, enabling greater automation and providing more people with faster access to a world of information and educational material. By deploying our bigger, faster networks, we believe that Ooredoo can play a leadership role in introducing these services across our footprint and we are committed to being the first to deliver on this opportunity”

Visitors to Mobile World Congress will be able to see Smart City technology in action, including a range of control centre solutions that manage smart metering, gated community access control and CCTV surveillance services. Ooredoo is actively working to introduce some of these services across its footprint, most recently becoming a Lead Partner in the Smart Cities Council in Qatar and organising a major conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, to discuss the potential for smart cities in Southeast Asia.

The Smart Learning section will demonstrate end-to-end solutions that offer Smart Learning experiences for children and adults. The section will also showcase next generation Mobile Device Management services that enable schools to communicate with students and teachers through their devices. Ooredoo companies have played a pioneering role in the provision of mobile education, with Ooredoo’s Wataniya Mobile in Palestine recently launching “Learn English” services for mobiles that enable young people to develop key language skills.

Another area where Ooredoo is taking on a leadership role is the field of M2M technologies, to enable the “Internet of Things” solutions. Ooredoo will host a special M2M demonstration area that will showcase some of the cutting-edge solutions already being implemented by Ooredoo, including new innovations for the energy, transport and financial sectors.

With Qatar becoming a global hub for international sporting events, particularly in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup 2022, Ooredoo is developing significant expertise in Smart Stadium technology. The Ooredoo Pavilion will showcase a range of intelligent network solutions that will provide fans inside the ground and viewers around the world with up-to-the-moment information and results at sporting events.

In partnership with GSMA, Ooredoo Qatar, Ooredoo Algeria and Indosat (part of the Ooredoo Group) will have a live trial of Mobile Connect - the GSMA standard for mobile identity services - throughout Mobile World Congress. Mobile Connect allows consumers to safely access digital services on their mobile phones, providing secure access to these services as well as greater privacy and robust data protection. Ooredoo is aiming to use its presence at the event to promote Mobile Connect as a truly global service, by demonstrating the interoperability between operators and service providers.

As part of its support for new thinking and innovation, Ooredoo is a main partner of the 4YFN, the dedicated event and network platform to connect startups, investors and corporations and a showcase for disruptive innovation in the mobile digital space at mobile world congress.

Ooredoo is also  is a founding member of the Arab Mobile App Challenge (AMAC), which has nominated seven teams of young people to compete in the Global Mobile Challenge that takes place during Mobile World Congress. Ooredoo has high hopes for the entrants, who are developing a range of apps designed to support education, health, entertainment and employability services.

The 2015 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona will run from 2-5 March 2015. The Ooredoo Pavilion will be in Hall 2.
