Summer of Learning: Sheraa empowers UAE's future women leaders with entrepreneurial skills

Over 200 students learnt the art of business and leadership from the country’s first university-based accelerator and training academy

Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (August 30, 2016):  Sheraa (Sharjah Entrepreneurship Centre) - a launch pad for aspiring young entrepreneurs in the United Arab Emirates - recently conducted a training workshop for young girls. The workshop engaged with more than 200 students between the ages of eleven and eighteen at ‘Sharjah Girl Guides’ and ‘Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah’. The training addressed key topics of business and entrepreneurship, focusing on business planning, product branding, effective leadership, and tricks of the trade in pitching new ideas.

Najla Al-Midfa, General Manager of Sheraa, said: “We believe that entrepreneurship must start early in one’s life, and this workshop has sown seeds of inspiration which can be nurtured over time. With relevant training and guidance, members of Sharjah Girl Guides and Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah will emerge as women leaders of the next generation, who champion success stories within the region’s social and business landscape.”

Spanning over eight extensive sessions, the workshop was led by Sheraa’s in-house trainers and mentors, whose interactive lectures, real-world case studies, and practical exercises were designed to introduce entrepreneurship as an attractive avenue for personal and economic fulfillment. The training also aimed at enhancing soft skills critical for pitching one’s idea to a discerning audience, and leading discussions and negotiations through effective communication.

Her Excellency Sheikha Aisha Khalid Al Qasimi, Director of Sajaya Young Ladies of Sharjah, commented: “Sheraa’s workshop infused confidence in the girls to recognize their individual talents. Such initiatives are important in grooming them to become skilled and productive members of society, and pass on the valuable learnings with friends and family members who wish to undertake the same journey.”

According to Shaikha Al Shamsi, Assistant Manager at Sharjah Girl Guides, interactions with experts facilitate greater learning and development for the youth: “The workshop inspired students to delve deeper into their interests and channel creative thought towards an entrepreneurial idea. Engaging with mentors gave them an opportunity to discuss their ideas and understand the practical application of academic concepts.”

The workshop is one of many initiatives by Sheraa to bridge the skills gap, and strengthen the competitiveness of youth and organizations in the UAE and wider region. Through collaborations with communities, educational institutions, and corporates, Sheraa demonstrates the collective commitment to infusing a positive entrepreneurial spirit in today’s youth, and investing in leaders of tomorrow through education beyond the classroom.

Sheraa’s state-of-the-art, 650 square metre facility is due for launch in October 2016.
