In response to the death of 550 pilgrims due to heatwave: 'Ummah for Earth' calls to combat the deadly effects of climate change by transitioning to renewable energy

June 19 - Beirut, Lebanon** – In response to the death of more than 550 pilgrims during this year's Hajj season, as temperatures reached 51.8°C in Mecca.

Nouhad Awwad, Campaigner and Global Outreach Coordinator at the Ummah for Earth Alliance, commented: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families, as we mourn the devastating loss of over 500 pilgrims in Mecca due to unprecedented heatwaves. This tragic loss is a reminder of the need to work hand-by-hand urgently to combat the devastating impacts of climate change. Awwad added "The solution is within our hands as Ummah, shifting away from fossil fuels, which are driving the climate crisis, and moving towards clean, renewable energy sources that protect our planet and prevent further tragedies. Let us honor the memory of those we lost by committing to a greener and more resilient world."
