INTERGALACTIC$ art next step in local artist's pursuit of world 'dollaration' [Dubai, January 16, 2014] LOCAL artist Jim Wheat has been working relentlessly on his space-themed retro exhibition, which will be on display at Dubai Media City's Media One Hotel opening on Sunday March 2, 2014 and running for 28 days. Hot on the heels of his ground-breaking 'Money Collection' in 2013, Jim is preparing the next set of unique art pieces designed to amuse, but also to make people really think. Jim said: “My next collection draws inspiration from my childhood – from early home computers, film and TV, and technology. I hope it speaks to a lot of people about the 'throw-away' society we live in, but will also bring some nostalgic memories.” Building on the influence of the dollar – a prevailing motif in all his work – with the new collection, Wheat provides an exploration into some of his favourite themes - science fiction, technology and nostalgia - and how they have all been affected and challenged by commercialisation. He aims to reveal elements of his personal journey from a world where little was known of technology or space travel, to today where technology has made the dreams of yesteryear a reality. “There will be 28 original art works on display over 28 days, with more than US$64,000 worth of art being given away, and you can expect some surprises, prizes and a lot of fun during the exhibition. We want people to come along to Media One to view the art, and enter a prize draw to win the masterpiece and a hand embellished print from the collection for just $1.” Media One's General Manager, Mark Lee, said: “We always welcome original art at the Media One Hotel, and we are delighted to invite Jim and his unique work back to our property throughout March. Last year, Jim's 'Money Collection' drew a great deal of global media attention, and we are gearing up for another month of Dollarsandart mayhem.” Jim's latest collection includes Star Wars, Dr. Who, early mobile phones and computers, and involve themes which are sure to cause as much of a stir with viewers as last year's 'Money Collection' did. As well as creating new art pieces, Jim has been working on a number of private commissions for individuals, for venues in Dubai and the UK, and is even creating a unique piece in collaboration with former WBO Heavyweight Boxing Champion, David Haye, to mark the opening of the sports star's new gym in Downtown Dubai. “It's been fantastic working with such a charismatic sports personality, and the piece I am creating for David will become a feature of his new state-of-the-art gym,” said Jim. David Haye said: “I love Jim's enthusiasm and his approach. I'm excited to be involved in this art project with him. Watch this space.” As part of the collaboration on the piece – entitled 'Making Hay While The Sun Shines' ; Jim is taking steps to honour Dubai's unsung heroes – the street cleaners, construction workers and gardeners, for example - via social media. Dollarsandart recently acted as one of the sponsors for the Beauty and Golf Tour at Dubai's Els Golf Club, presented by former Miss World, Tatana Kucharova; and Jim gave away a piece in the British Business Group's Christmas dinner Charity Auction. A rare print of $uperman, Number Nine in #The Money collection, went for AED4,500, raising money for four charities, including Gulf4Good. As part of the artist's philosophy, with every piece of Dollarsandart sold a donation is made to the charity Joining Jack, (www.joiningjack.org) which is working to find a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
