Laengen Podiums in Mallorca while Gaviria 9th after Crash in Giro

Strong run in Mallorca continues with 2nd for Vegard Stake Laengen

Vegard Stake Laengen took home a strong 2nd place after a daring escape at the Trofeo Andratx - Mirador des Colomer (1.1).

May 16, 2021:  The Norwegian attacked with four others on the main climb of the day before Colombian rider Winner Anacona (Arkea-Samsic) broke clear solo to take the win with Laengen coming in just 10’’ off the pace for his first podium of the year.

Laengen: “It was a hard race again today from the start, there was a lot of attacks since the moment the flag dropped. I waiting a long time to make my move but eventually picked the right one. I managed to link up with three guys in the last kilometres. I felt really strong today but just missed out on the win, but I’m still pleased with the podium.”
Meanwhile at the Giro d’Italia, Fernando Gaviria infiltrated the breakaway of the day in a daring move which arrived to the line on Stage 8 from Foggia to Guardia Sanframondi (170km). The Colombian finished 9th overall but was involved in a crash which hampered his chances of a better result, thankfully escaping with just bumps and bruises.

The stage went to Frenchman Victor Lafay (Cofidis) while Davide Formolo holds his position at the head of the GC in 11th place just 55’’ behind race leader Atila Valter (Groupama-FDJ).

Tomorrow Stage 9 takes the riders on the mountainous trek from Castel di Sangro to Campo Felice (Rocca di Cambio (158km).
