Dubai, United Arab Emirates - 26 June 2019:   Two GEMS Education schools, The Millennium School and GEMS Jumeirah Primary School have collectively raised AED 500,000 for Dubai Cares ‘Adopt a School’ initiative, which will go towards the establishment of new community-based schools in Nepal and Cambodia.

His Excellency, Dr. Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer at Dubai Cares said: “It’s overwhelming to see students from The Millennium School and GEMS Jumeirah Primary School, come together to help enable their peers in other parts of the world to flourish in their educational journey. I would like to thank and congratulate the students, parents, teachers and school management on this fundraising initiative, which truly reflects the values of empathy, compassion and generosity that are deeply rooted within the UAE community. This initiative is also a reflection of the UAE’s image as a beacon of global co-existence and openness that is fully in line with the Year of Tolerance. The students’ fundraising efforts will certainly make a long-lasting impact on the children and their communities in Nepal and Cambodia.”

The GEMS Jumeirah Primary School Spring Fair preparations kicked off six months prior, and the Parent-Teach Association (PTA) received immense support from the school at every level including parents and children. The committees that form the PTA’s teams worked tirelessly towards the fair, as they do every year, with the aim of raising the highest amount of funds for Dubai Cares.

Rachel Higgins, Principal and CEO of GEMS Jumeirah Primary School, said: “Once again I could not be more proud of the GEMS Jumeirah Primary School family serving not only our own community but impacting the lives of others around the world. I would like to thank everyone in the school community who played a role in making our fundraising event happen, and for the substantial funds we have raised for Dubai Cares.”

The Millennium School held a winter carnival towards the end of last year, that was inaugurated by Michael Guzder, Vice President of Education at GEMS Education, and welcomed a few special guests.

Ambika Gulati, Principal and CEO, The Millennium School, said: “The annual winter carnival is the only school function in which each and every member of the school community chooses to work collectively and cohesively towards a common goal. Right from KG to grade 12 and all staff members from support staff to admin and the education teams, have contributed their time, effort and money for Dubai Cares and this wonderful school-run event.”

Funds raised by the schools will go towards building three and four classroom schools for over three hundred children, complete with classroom furniture, books and other educational resources. The money will also fund the construction of basic accommodation for two community teachers and provide a well for the community.
