GQ names “Best New Menswear Designers in America” for 2014

Gap Partners with GQ and Designers to Create Third Limited-Edition Collection

The project, established in 2007, recognizes the most brilliant new menswear makers in the country and works to advance the talented up-and-comers. The designers were selected by GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson and creative director Jim Moore, along with the magazine’s fashion editors. As part of the project, the four designers will collaborate with Gap on a limited-edition collection.

“Every member of GQ's Best New Menswear Designers class of 2014 represents an individual aesthetic that celebrates their unique talent, bringing to the mix a strong point of view and a bold statement,” said Moore. “While they are each very different, they have striking similarities that mesh well to create what will be a truly groundbreaking limited edition collection. In this third year partnering with Gap, we are excited to work closely with these designers to create a collection that will speak to men everywhere.”

The 2014 Best New Menswear Designers in America selected by GQ are:

•    Brooklyn Tailors - Suit maker to the creative class, Daniel Lewis, designs for the Williamsburg hipster who is rapidly growing up. The brand, grounded in classic suiting, sets itself apart with high-end fabrics. Bold plaid shirts, patterned ties, and eye-popping outerwear compliment the modern menswear essentials, creating a unique look that's office appropriate but plenty cool.

•    En Noir - Designer Rob Garcia’s cutting edge designs effortlessly blend high-fashion influences with street culture. His self-described “monochromatic minimalism” is avant-gard personified and makes En Noir the dark lord of streetwear. En Noir reimagines basics as broody leather goods and is firmly rooted in music, with loyal customers like Kanye West, A$AP Rocky and Pusha T.

•    John Elliot + Co. - Los Angeles designer John Elliot started his namesake line with the intent of creating a new wardrobe of basics for the modern man, from slim jeans to an everyday hoodie. Inspired by skateboarding culture, Kurt Cobain, and modern architecture, Elliott offers a new breed of West Coast style.

•    M.Nii - The original M.Nii was a Hawaiian tailor shop known for creating custom surf shorts for locals and surf enthusiasts in the early1950’s. It’s this rich history that designer John Moore draws on when designing his retro-inspired collection. M.Nii’s legacy lives on in his striped t-shirts, washed flannels, broken-in chinos and, of course, perfect tailored surf shorts.

“We are super excited about this year’s design talent for our collaboration with GQ,” said Tony Kretten, Gap VP of Menswear Design.   “Each of the four designers has a unique signature style however each has a common sensibility akin to Gap’s core mantra - What are the perfect iconic pieces that define the modern guy. The team here at Gap can’t wait to show the world the new heights that this collaboration is about to take.”

All four designers have been given the opportunity to create looks for a limited-edition Gap collection.

In selected Gap stores October onwards.
