Dubai, UAE, 29 January 2014: Following a four-week campaign in Carrefour hypermarkets across the United Arab Emirates, Procter & Gamble and Carrefour are donating funds to UNICEF, which will specifically finance 100,000 vaccines.

The campaign builds on Procter & Gamble's long-term UNICEF-Pampers partnership and aims to raise awareness of maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT).  It also provides opportunities for shoppers to support the global initiative to eliminate the disease by purchasing select products. For each select product purchased from the Carrefour stores, Procter & Gamble and Carrefour donated a vaccine to UNICEF.

“We're overwhelmed by the response of shoppers in the UAE who have shown their support for eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus,” said Al Rajwani, VP and General Manager for Procter & Gamble in the Arabian Peninsula and Pakistan. “This is the first time that we have partnered with Carrefour locally in the UAE for UNICEF and the amount of vaccines raised by UAE shoppers has exceeded our expectations.” 

“UNICEF values the support from our private sector partnerships and this new campaign demonstrates how partnerships can work together to mobilize support for children. No children should be dying from this preventable disease.  Yet it continues to claim the life of one child every nine minutes. Together we can make a difference by helping to ensure that all mothers are vaccinated against MNT and thus protecting their children from tetanus.” said Dr. Ibrahim El-Ziq, UNICEF Gulf Area Representative.

In addition to the donation of vaccines to UNICEF, the campaign raised funds for the Red Crescent within the UAE, to finance local initiatives.

Procter & Gamble won the best Corporate-NGO Collaboration award at the Arabia CSR Awards for its 1 Pampers Pack = 1 Life Saving Vaccine partnership with UNICEF. P&G worked with UNICEF to both raise funds and awareness for a vaccination campaign in Yemen, where MNT is still prevalent.
