Dubai Tourism goes digital at 'GITEX'

Dubai, UAE; 23 October 2013: Dubai's Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DTCM) is enriching the Dubai visitor experience by providing services and more information through a range of new smartphone applications during the Gitex Technology Week 2013, currently taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre.

At the event, DTCM is exhibiting an update on its existing ‘Definitely Dubai' smartphone app that is designed to help tourists and visitors explore the ever-growing tourism attractions of the emirate.

The department is also exhibiting a new initiative which will digitally map Dubai's 600 plus hotel establishments and future planned hotels, using a Geographic Information system (GIS). In its developmental stage, The Dubai Hotels Supply Live Link has been designed to provide the latest available data on Dubai's current and planned hotel supply to decision-makers and planners within the government and private sector.

Suhail Buhelaiba, Director of Information Technology at DTCM said: “Visitors to our stand will have a chance to familiarise themselves with the latest Smartphone services and applications developed and operated by DTCM. The Definitely Dubai app has been upgraded to include a new design and navigation, new links to related content such as information about the UAE's bid for Expo 2020, and new sharing options for information about Dubai, enabling users to share insights about Dubai that will be useful to tourists and residents.

“We have also integrated information from Dubai Calendar, so users of the app have immediate access to news about events taking place in Dubai. Other e-services we are exhibiting include definitelydubai.com, dubaicalendar.com, and services related to Dubai hotel classifications, e-booking and flight-booking.”

The development of the Dubai Hotels Supply Live Link is representative of DTCM's focus on developing e- and smart-services which will benefit both visitors and industry partners – a focus which is a key priority for 2014.

Sumaya Karam, Director, One Stop Information Centre at DTCM said: “DTCM gathers a wealth of information on all sectors within the tourism industry and provides this in various forms to our partners. The development of the Dubai Hotels Supply Live Link is in line with our objective to use digital technologies to increase the flow and speed of information to our partners.”

Moreover, Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) are using cutting edge technology to market and promote their festivals and events starting with their flagship festival brand, Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), which will be held from 2 January to 2nd February.

DFRE has launched a unique DSF portal at www.mydsf.ae well in advance of the festival's 19th edition, that not only provides a range of various shopping experiences that visitors can enjoy during their stay in Dubai, but is also loaded with new features and functionalities aimed at providing a personalised experience to international visitors who spend a substantial amount of time online when planning their holiday shopping. For the first time, Internet users can access information about DSF 2014 based on their preferences in three different languages – Arabic, English and Chinese.

Additionally, the website uses geomarketing technology to push information to the fingertips of potential visitors with the landing page customised in such a way that it shows the preferred choices of visitors from a particular region. Such preferences have been incorporated into the site based on in-depth market analysis and research undertaken by DFRE that provides valuable insights into what tourists are looking for when they visit Dubai to shop during DSF.
