Dubai, UAE; September 30, 2013: When members of Generation Y (those born in the 1980s and 1990s) choose an employer, what do they look for? It is a question that is crucial for the Middle East's hospitality sector given the needs for highly skilled professionals to meet the demands of this growing industry. A Research from Laureate Hospitality Education—which includes top-ranked hospitality schools Glion Institute of Higher Education, Les Roches International School of Hotel Management, Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School and Kendall College—provides valuable new insights.

According to the study, which was presented at The Hotel Show in Dubai, international career opportunities have emerged as a significant motivation for students to pursue a degree in hospitality management. Career advancement, salary, training and development opportunities and reputation top the list of characteristics Generation Y seeks when considering employers.

According to the survey of Laureate Hospitality Education, some key points stood out as follows:

  • 47% of students gave greater importance to career advancement when job hunting for the first time; however, 79% of students said it was important or very important to balance private and professional life, and 40% were not willing to give up their personal or family life for higher compensation.
  • A majority would like to work for a resort hotel, but in a close to a city and with more than 23% preferring a boutique hotel setting.
  • 69% of students would like to work for a sustainable company.
  • 26% of graduates would like to obtain management trainee positions, while 17% prefer a direct-entry position.

“We have students from UAE, Kuwait, KSA, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Egypt and Jordan studying at our top-ranked schools, and many of them look forward to working in the region once they complete their degrees,” said Fabienne Rollandin, director of industry relations and market research at Laureate Hospitality Education, who presented the study. “Monitoring their perceptions and expectations will help the hospitality sector create the right environment to attract these highly talented individuals.”

The UAE's hospitality industry is expanding due to a boost in its tourism sector. Combined, they are expected to increase their annual revenue to $7.5 billion by 2016. According to the April 2013 Ernst & Young Middle East Hotel Benchmark Survey Report, the hospitality industry in the UAE saw positive growth throughout Q1 2013. Dubai achieved an overall increase in average occupancy of 2%, along with growth in average daily rate from US$267 to US$284.

The survey conducted by Laureate Hospitality Education was completed by 474 LHE schools' students.
