Forum will be held in Dubai from 8 to 10 November 2015

Dubai, November 2, 2015 - Ellucian, the leading global provider for higher education software and solutions, is hosting its much anticipated annual conference, Ellucian Live Middle East, from 8 to 10 November 2015. The higher education conference, which will take place at the Madinat Jumeirah Conference & Events Centre in Dubai, is the largest event of its kind in the region with more than 500 decision makers and policy influencers expected to attend.

Redefining success in the 21st century
“This year’s theme for Ellucian Live Middle East, ‘Redefining Success in the 21st Century’, aligns with the continued emphasis that Middle East governments are placing on creating innovation and knowledge-based economies,” said Jeff Ray, President and Chief Executive Officer at Ellucian, who will also be speaking at the conference.

Ellucian Live Middle East will be held just before the high-profile UAE Innovation Week, which was recently announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, with the vision of establishing the UAE as the most important destination for innovation in the region. Education is a key focus area in this initiative, and the government is urging the academic sector to participate.

The UAE government has recently approved its federal budget for 2016, with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid emphasizing the priorities of social development, education, and health. Of the DH 48.5 billion approved for the budget, 21.2% of spending will be allocated to education and 15.5% will go to social development. Similarly, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has invested approximately $57 billion (SR 217 billion) in various education initiatives, in a plan to stimulate sustainability in the market through education, innovation and economic diversification.

The size of the education sector in the region has grown exponentially over the last decade. In 2012, there were 10.7 million students enrolled in the GCC. According to Alpen Capital, the number of students and workforce learners in the region is expected to rise by 3% annually, leading to 13.7 million students by 2020. Of this, higher education will account for 16.5% of total enrolments.

“The conference serves as a platform for leaders in the field to discuss the current state of higher education in the region, the link between institutions and student success, the role of technology in the growth of the sector, and how collaboration promotes success for students beyond the institution and into the workforce,” added Jeff Ray.

Educational success: beyond the grades

Ellucian Live Middle East will include global and regional keynote speakers who will share insights into current and future innovations. Over the course of the three-day event, attendees will also be invited to participate in hands-on workshops, roundtable discussions, and other forums that will help them engage, learn and exchange ideas on the future of higher education.

This year’s global keynote is Dr. Diana Oblinger, a member of Ellucian’s Board of Directors, and former President and Chief Executive officer of EDUCAUSE, the leading non-profit association for information technology in higher education.  The theme of Dr Oblinger’s speech will be around creating new ways to engage and empower learners to achieve student success.

Other notable keynote speakers include Dr. Tod Laursen, President of Khalifa University of Science, Technology, and Research (KUSTAR), and record-breaking explorer Adrian Hayes.
Event sponsors and exhibitors include, Naseej,  ITS (International Turnkey Systems), Evisions, SBM (Saudi Business Machines) , Adirondack Solutions, eXplorance, Human Logic, MDSL sal, SciQuest, Semestry, TouchNet and Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU). Additionally, Ellucian has recently partnered with HBMSU to launch its first official training center in the Middle East. The facility aims to use the Ellucian Banner system in order to provide classroom-based vocational training to faculty, administrative officials, and IT teams of the university.

The student perspective
Besides offering a platform for discussion and debate on the higher education sector, Ellucian Live Middle East also hosts a student representative who is selected from a pool of talented regional candidates. This year, Ellucian asked students to submit short videos explaining what redefining student success in the 21st century means to them.

“We are honoured to have Chaimae Dyaz from Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco, as our student speaker at Ellucian Live Middle East 2015. This keynote epitomizes the voice of the student body, representing future leaders and the importance of student success,” said Mathew Boice, Vice President for Ellucian Middle East & Africa.
