28 October 2015, Dubai, UAE – Iconic Arab diva Umm Kulthum has been recognised as a vintage fashion icon and one of history’s smartest travellers in a new photo book launched by Heathrow Airport and supermodel Yasmin Le Bon.

The exclusive coffee table book, A Journey in Style, celebrates some of the most stylish travellers, outfits and luggage to grace Heathrow’s concourses since London’s global hub airport opened in the 1940s.

The collection of archive photography highlights the enduring relationship between fashion and flying, capturing stunning images of the jet-set from yesteryear through to today’s style elite.

The book includes over 160 stunning images capturing the glamour of air travel from stylish departures and statement arrivals. The glossy pages feature some of the most iconic style influencers of all time, such as screen sirens Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich, music legends Mick Jagger and The Beatles, queen of the catwalk Kate Moss and HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

A Journey in Style shows the beloved late Egyptian singer in a photograph capturing her arrival at Heathrow in 1967, where she met with famous French actor Jean-Claude Pascal. Sporting her signature black sunglasses and beehive up-do, ‘The Star of the East’ exudes classic glamour in a bejewelled abaya with lace trim and a long fur coat draped over her shoulders.

The book has been created to mark the completion of a three year £40 million programme to bring together some of the most luxurious fashion brands in the world at Heathrow airport and cement its reputation as a global fashion destination in its own right.

Chanel opens its doors to customers on December 22 in Terminal 5, joining Louis Vuitton, Mulberry, Burberry, Cartier and Rolex and crowning the redevelopment.

Terminal 5 will then boast 23 fashion and luxury brand outlets, each of which has been beautifully designed to echo its brand’s flagship store wherever it is in the world.

The foreword for A Journey in Style was written by globally renowned supermodel Yasmin Le Bon, who has modelled for the likes of Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Chanel and Chloé. Yasmin has been photographed countless times travelling through Heathrow, flying to international fashion shows, travelling with her family and accompanying her husband, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, on worldwide tours.

Commenting on the book, Yasmin said: “There’s something fabulously glamorous about flying that has always fascinated me and to this day I still get excited about travelling. From the starlets of the 50s stepping onto the runway in their oversized sunglasses and trollies stacked with monogrammed luggage, to today’s style icons, air travel has always been packed with stylish possibility.”

“The book includes stunning archive images from some of the world’s most renowned photographers, including Dennis Stone, Heathrow’s resident photographer since 1946 – and there’s even one or two of myself in there! It’s been hugely enjoyable working with the team to celebrate the unique relationship between style and flying and to see the book come together. I’ll definitely be keeping a copy on my coffee table.”

Jonathan Coen, Retail Director at Heathrow said: “Heathrow and fashion have long gone hand-in-hand, as the launch of A Journey in Style proves. While we’ve always been known for the quality of our retail experience, our recent programme has expanded our luxury fashion offering to 23 premium stores, rivalling some of the most exclusive shopping destinations in the UK.”

A Journey in Style is the perfect Christmas gift for fans of fashion, travel and vintage glamour, and is available on Amazon.co.uk and at Heathrow airport for £15 (85 AED). Anyone wanting to tweet about the campaign can use #JetSetStyle.
