Gulf Traffic Awards spotlight industry best in regional road transport and infrastructure

Dubai, UAE, 10 December, 2013: Three Emirati students have won the inaugural TRL Road Safety Student Award for a proposed road safety awareness campaign that highlights the need for parents to put their toddlers in child seats when on the road.

Studying at the Ruwais Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) in the Al Gharbia region, Albanoot Eisa Al Mansouri, Noora Al Mansoori, and Mariam Al Mansoori were the outright winners from the 26 UAE team nominations for their Abu Dhabi-based campaign, which included a creative strategy, a story board and a video.

The three female students were celebrated at the Gulf Traffic Awards gala dinner ceremony last night attended by hundreds of road, rail, parking and public transport professionals at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The two campaign objectives were to increase the awareness levels among parents on the need to use child safety seats while driving, and to overcome the negligent attitude in using child safety seats.

“We were really impressed with the initiative of these three students and the high quality and detail of their road safety awareness campaign proposal, and we hope to assist with the wider distribution of the campaign,” said Simon Labbett, Director of TRL United Arab Emirates, who introduced the award this year.

“The overall quality of the submissions that we received was outstanding, and deciding on the final winner was very tough.  What all entries shared was a deep understanding of road safety challenges in the UAE and the students' considerable problem analysis skills.
“We were also impressed with how much the students care about and recognise road safety as an important component for well-being in the dynamically developing UAE.”

The TRL Road Safety Student Award was launched by the Transport and Research Laboratory (TRL) to encourage the UAE's smartest young minds and future leaders to come forward with ideas that demonstrate improvement to road safety in the areas of education and training, communication, road safety data, engineering, and enforcement.  There were more than 250 students involved in the first edition of the award.

Added Labbett: “This is the first award of its kind that recognises students' thinking and intellectual contribution to road safety in the region and will hopefully encourage many students in years to come to be involved in the transport field.

“Students are tomorrow's leading thinkers and decision makers in their disciplines, and as drivers, riders and pedestrians they can combine their own experience of road safety with fresh and innovative ideas of how to improve it.  After the positive experience with the award in its first year, the TRL is keen to develop and expand the scheme in the coming years.”

The Gulf Traffic Awards is a feature of the Gulf Traffic Exhibition and Conference, which opened yesterday and takes place until tomorrow (11 December).  The awards attracted more than 100 nominations in eight categories, and were judged by an independent panel of industry experts.

Other notable winners of the evening included the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) which won the Road Safety Achievement Award for their Pedestrian Safety & Mobility Action Plan for Dubai; and Osama Al Kurdi, Senior Road Safety Data and Information Analyst for the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport, who won the Personal Achievement for Road Safety Award.

Introduced in 2009, the Gulf Traffic Awards have become an integral part of the Gulf Traffic Exhibition and Conference.  The two-day conference, which concludes today, addresses the challenges in road safety and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in the Gulf region.

Supported by Abu Dhabi Police and SAEED, the tenth edition of Gulf Traffic brings together more than 200 exhibitors from 20 countries involved in the design, build, and maintenance of the region's road, rail, parking and public transport projects.
