An Interactive Workshop: Dyscalculia Screener and Information Exchange about Access Arrangements Lexicon Reading Center is proud to announce this practical and informative workshop. The sessions are conducted by renowned experts and cover topics of great importance to both parents and teachers. The workshop will guide the participants in the interpretation of tests, emphasizing the need for a clinical approach when assessing individuals. It will shows participants how to make diagnosis and assessment an integral part of everyday teaching. Session I : Dyscalculia Screener The 31 Characteristics that Lead to Math Failure 6.00 pm - 7.00 pm There are a number of key behaviours and concepts that are highly significant for anyone who is trying to learn mathematics. Dr Steve Chinn will present his most recently developed Dyscalculia Screening Checklists which were published in Dr Chinn’s newest book : “More Trouble With Maths”. Dr Chinn will pass on his extensive experience and expertise to: - show how to consider all the factors relating to mathematical learning difficulties.
- explain how these factors can be investigated
- explore their impact on learning
- discuss and provide a range of tests, ranging from assessing pre-requisite skills such as working memory to normative tests for mathematical knowledge and skills.
Dr Chinn will discuss how to implement various strategies in the classroom to identify barriers to learning and set up appropriate intervention programs. Session II : Interactive Forum on JCQ Updated Guidelines on Access Arrangements by Malcolm Litten, Rudolf Stockling and Dr Steve Chinn 7.15 pm - 8.00 pm Many parents and teachers are still worried about accommodations and access arrangements for students with learning disabilities, especially regarding their access to laptops and assistive technologies such as text to speech (reader) and speech to text (writer). Malcolm Litten will update parents and teachers about specific requirements for the use of technology in examinations with particular reference to JCQ requirements for GCSE and Key Stage 2 tests. He will advise on the role parents and teachers can play in advocating for their children. Participants will then have the opportunity to discuss specific issues with our panel. The Speakers Dr Steve Chinn (PhD, AMBDA, Mark College, UK) is an internationally regarded expert trainer and lecturer in the area of Dyslexia, Mathematics and Dyscalculia and is the author of several publications, including the highly acclaimed The Trouble with Mathematics. Dr Chinn has served on the councils of the British Dyslexia Association and the Dyslexia Institute and has more than thirty five years of teaching experience. Steve set up the first Post Graduate Course for maths and dyslexia which was accredited by the British Dyslexia Association for Associate Membership (Numeracy) status. Rudolf Stocklingr (MSc, Dip.Ed, Dip.Psych) is the clinical director and the head of the Assessment Unit at Lexicon Reading Center. Rudolf is a licensed educational psychologist. He has been a full member of the Australian Psychological Society (MAPS) since 1991. Rudolf has more than 30 years of experience in the assessment of children with learning differences. He is a fluent speaker of English, German and French. He conducts his assessments in all the above languages. Malcolm Litten (AMBDA, M.Phil (Special Needs), Dip) has worked for over 40 years as an English teacher, half of that time at Mark College, a specialist school for dyslexic pupils established by Dr Steve Chinn. Malcolm is currently engaged in research into the use of assistive technology in various schools in England. Malcolm’s mission is to try to spread good practice much more widely which he believes could make a significant difference in how students with dyslexia experience education and become independent learners.
