Dubai, UAE: 27 April 2015: Launching tomorrow at Careers UAE 2015, Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), will unveil short term and long term plans which will see it lead the way in the recruitment and development of young Emirati people.

The ‘Tourism Talent Incubator’, will be a long-term industry familiarisation programme offered to all new Emirati graduate recruits to DTCM, with the first intake happening later in the year. The modular plan will be designed to provide opportunities for graduates to obtain a broad experience of the tourism industry, enabling them to identify future career paths which suit their talents and preferences. Undertaken as part of their DTCM employment, the programme will see individuals completing training within different sectors of the tourism and hospitality industry and performing a number of tasks which provide exposure to the wider tourism economy, for example working on the Visitor Information Bureau at Dubai International Airport, becoming a guide on tour buses, or representing Dubai at exhibitions and conferences. The individuals will gain a 360° appreciation for the industry and create recommendation reports covering aspects of the tourism sector such as food, adventure, hotels, cultural activities and more. It is hoped that the training programme, which will take place over two to three years, will nurture and incubate young talent within the industry.

His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented: “With tourism a major pillar of Dubai’s strategic economic diversification and central to the Dubai Plan 2021, the industry and its related sectors offer a wealth of employment opportunities for Emirati nationals, both within the government and the private sector. Through the launch and operation of the Tourism Talent Incubator, it is our aim to identify and nurture talented young Emiratis who can become the future of our industry and play key roles in the continued contribution of tourism to Dubai’s growth. Currently in the ideation phase, the programme will be bench-marked against the training plans of other Dubai-organisations, and be developed with one objective in mind: to create the tourism leaders of our future.”

“ANA Dubai” (“I Am Dubai”)

Complementing the announcement of the programme, DTCM is currently profiling a number of young Emiratis who work for the organisation, highlighting the important roles they play in promoting Dubai to the world, with the aim of attracting further applications for jobs at DTCM.

Titled “ANA DUBAI” (Arabic for “I Am Dubai”), the campaign’s short term focus is an increased presence at events and the placement of case studies within media outlets. The first event attended under this new scheme is Careers 2015, the UAE’s leading recruitment, training and education exhibition. DTCM will be on stand (B6-2 Hall 6) and invite any Emirati nationals interested in a future within the tourism industry to visit the stand. Also present on the stand will be representatives from a number of hotels and attractions, to which Emirati candidates can apply for relevant positions.

In support of “I Am Dubai”, an Instagram account has been established to profile Emiratis working in Dubai’s tourism industry and related sectors. The account can be found on Instagram @AnaDubai.

Visitors to the stand will also be able to test their knowledge of Dubai with a fun Wheel of Dubai game. By spinning the Wheel of Dubai and answering set questions regarding the city of Dubai and its tourism industry correctly, players will find out ‘how Dubai’ they are.

Mariam Al Maeeni, Director of HR at DTCM, commented: “Our vision is to nurture and train Emiratis who will contribute to the growth of one of the city’s most important industries and play a role in the build-up to EXPO 2020 and beyond. Our new approach to recruitment and training will not only benefit the individuals who join our team; giving them a better understanding of the tourism industry as a whole and knowing what our various stakeholders do, it will also enable us to discover different skills which the individuals themselves might not even realise they had.

We are particularly looking to recruit young Emirati people as we believe there are no better ambassadors for our city than people who are born and raised here – they are the backbone of Dubai.”

Training Solutions

DTCM currently provides multi-level training support through its Training Solutions scheme which was launched in 2001, with the objective of enriching the skills and knowledge of all personnel within the emirate’s tourism and hospitality work force, and the ultimate mission of ensuring that Dubai’s tourism industry provides world class services at all levels.

A key programme currently operated by Training Solutions is ‘START for Emiratization’. The Skills, Tasks, and Results Training Program, developed by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, START provides training for professionals in the hospitality industry across many areas including food and beverage, front desk, reservations, housekeeping, bell services, restaurant service, banquet setup and service, and more. Guest service, professionalism, and career exploration are important components of this program which is a one-year or 180 classroom hour curriculum that gives students the real-world knowledge and skills needed for a long-term career in the hospitality industry.
