Dubai, UAE, 08 December 2014 - La Moda Sunglasses and Emirates NBD, a leading bank in the region, today launched a charitable initiative to help protect the eyes of UAE laborers from the harmful effects of severe sun exposure.People residing in the Gulf region are exposed to high sun indexes and therefore harmful Ultra Violet (UV) rays. The invisible UV rays from the sun can damage any part of the eye and directly affect the cornea, lens and retina which can lead to cataract, slow blindness and even cancer.

To address this issue, La Moda Sunglasses, the fastest growing sunglass retailer in the GCC, has tied up with Emirates NBD, to provide an opportunity and platform for UAE residents to donate their old sunglasses to laborers who work outdoors.

Donated sunglasses will be repaired, sanitized and distributed to the laborers in the UAE. Donation boxes will be placed in La Moda stores across UAE till 31st December 2014 in the following locations -Dubai: Deira City Centre, Dubai Festival City,  Ibn Battuta Mall, Jumeirah Park Pavilion; Sharjah: Sharjah City Centre, Centre; Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Mall, The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri, Deerfields Mall; Fujairah: Fujairah City Centre.

“Our Chairman, Firoz Merchant, has always believed in giving back to society and thisinitiative of giving sunglasses to laborers in the region has been work in progress for a number of years. It is important for laborers to use sunglasses to protect their eyes and avoid preventable eye related issues in the future. Thanks to Emirates NBD for this joint initiative to increase awareness and collect old sunglasses. In addition to these old sunglasses, we will also donate a further 1,000 new sunglasses,” said Amran Iqbal, CEO of La Moda Sunglasses.

In this joint initiative, Emirates NBD will increase awareness about this programmeand will encourage its employees to donate their sunglasses and set an example to others in the community to give back and play an active role in changing someone else’s life.

Speaking about this initiative, Vikram Krishna, Head of Group Marketing and Customer Experience at Emirates NBD, said: “At Emirates NBD, we value the act of giving and believe that a small gesture can make a big difference to society. We are delighted to be part of this great initiative that aims to improve the health of laborers who continue to play a vital role in building the nation.”

Residents can drop their old sunglasses at the stores and get 40% off on a pair of brand new ones. They can wear their new shades with pride, as their act of kindness will bring a smile on the faces of hard working laborers who toil in the sun.
