UAE participants of UPU International Letter Writing Competition honoured

Dubai, UAE, October 16, 2016:  Emirates Post Group celebrated World Post Day with a special function in which the UAE winners of the ‘UPU International Letter Writing Competition for Young People 2016’ were honoured, along with the participants in the Reading Week program.

At the ceremony, the top 10 student letter-writers in Arabic and top 3 in English were presented with certificates and gifts. The UAE leg of the competition attracted 3,000 entries from over 500 schools.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief of Postal Operations Affairs at EPG, Mr. Sultan Al Midfa, said: “In line with the Reading initiative launched by the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Emirates Post Group is pleased to incorporate this theme into this year’s celebration of World Post Day, through a series of week-long events during which employees and invited students got together to share the joy of reading.

“As we celebrate World Post Day, the UAE represented by the Emirates Post Group is proud to have added another laurel to its achievements: membership to the UPU Council of Administration (CA) for the period 2017-2020. This honour is the result of the efforts made by the government under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to boost the happiness of UAE people and make it a model nation internationally.”

Mr. Al Midfa congratulated the shortlisted UAE participants of the UPU International Letter Writing Competition for Young People on the theme ‘Write a letter to your 45-year-old self’. He also praised the efforts of the school administrations and the jury.

Chief Commercial Officer of EPG Mr. Ibrahim Bin Karam read out the speech of the UPU Director General, Mr. Bishar A. Hussein, released on the occasion of World Post Day.

Mr. Bishar said in his speech: “Our customers trust us and we are also the only trusted partner to provide locally and globally essential services to the public thanks to the universal service delivery network and obligations.

“Our customers' needs, however, are changing rapidly. Modern information and communications technologies have created a new type of consumer, for whom delivering at the doorstep is not enough; they want service when and where they need it. The demand is for more flexible and personalized services.

“While these innovations may be disruptive, we are hopeful that, as has happened with other advancements before, the Post will turn these challenges into opportunities and stay relevant to its customers. To achieve this, the Post must continuously transform and find new ways to go beyond simply delivering to the customer's doorstep.”

The UPU International Letter Writing Competition 2016 attracted 980,000 entries from around the globe.  The top 3 winners were from Vietnam, Bulgaria and Slovenia.
