RTA Marks GCC Traffic Week 2026 with Wide-Ranging Activities to Promote Pedestrian Safety in Coordination with Ministry of Interior

Dubai. Roads and Transport Authority. 4th May 2026:

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) marked the GCC Traffic Week 2026 with a wide range of awareness activities focused on traffic safety guidelines for road-crossing. Organised in coordination with RTA’s partners, the activities will target drivers, pedestrians, and users of soft mobility means across Dubai, with participation from specialised entities across the UAE. The GCC Traffic Week runs from 3rd to 8th May 2026 under the theme “I Cross Safely”.

RTA’s annual participation in GCC Traffic Week events and activities forms a core part of its awareness efforts targeting road users. It also reflects RTA’s values and mission towards individuals and the wider community, particularly in promoting pedestrian safety.

Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency said that RTA continues to advance its integrated efforts to enhance pedestrian safety in Dubai through an advanced traffic system that has positioned the emirate among the world’s safest cities. He noted that the road fatality rate fell from 21.7 deaths per 100,000 population in 2007 to 1.4 in 2025, reflecting the success of the plans and measures implemented by RTA under its traffic safety strategy, in cooperation with strategic partners and the private sector, including Emirates Driving Institute and Michelin Tyres.

Al Khzaimy noted that RTA adopts an integrated system that includes the construction and upgrade of bridges, tunnels and pedestrian crossings. By the end of 2025, the number of pedestrian bridges had reached around 177, including metro station bridges. Dubai’s roads also feature more than 2,000 traffic calming measures, supported by traffic signs, road markings and year-round awareness events targeting various segments of the community.

Last year, RTA reached more than 30,000 workers through the “Pedestrian Safety” programme, in addition to around 47,000 students who benefited from awareness lectures focused on pedestrian safety and safe road-crossing.

Al Khzaimy said RTA has prepared for the GCC Traffic Week with a series of activities aligned with this year’s theme. These include placing awareness messages on advertising screens, displaying the week’s logo on e-screens across Dubai’s roads, organising pedestrian safety awareness activities for more than 1,000 workers, and distributing reflective caps to metro and public bus users, along with an instruction booklet on safe road-crossing.

The booklet includes a QR code directing users to an awareness video that explains the risks of crossing from undesignated areas and highlights the fine for such violation which amounts for AED 400.

The activities also include field awareness initiatives highlighting the need for cyclists and electric scooter users to dismount when crossing roads at pedestrian crossings. Several users of individual mobility modes who comply with traffic safety rules will also be honoured.

The programme further includes a visit to pedestrians injured in traffic incidents at Rashid Hospital, with the participation of motorists and delivery riders, as well as school activities under the “Golden Rules for Generational Safety” programme, implemented by RTA in cooperation with strategic partners.

Al Khzaimy called on all members of the public to follow safe crossing rules, use designated crossings, and remain fully alert while walking, particularly when approaching intersections and pedestrian crossings. He stressed that the safety of pedestrians and users of soft mobility means in Dubai is a shared community responsibility that requires everyone’s cooperation.
