Meintjes Holds on to Top 10 GC Position in Stage 14
UAE Team Emirates’ Louis Meintjes maintains top ten whilst teammate Marcato finishes in top 20
16 July 2017, United Arab Emirates: Stage 14 saw UAE Team Emirates’, Louis Meintjes hold on to his ninth position in the overall General Classification standings whilst Italian teammate Marco Marcato finished amongst the top 20. This stage saw Chris Froome (Team Sky) regain the Maillot Jaune with an 18 second lead between him and his next rival Fabio Aru (Astana Pro Team). The stage was won by Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) who finished 15 and 25 seconds ahead of UAE Team Emirates’ Marcato and Meintjes respectively.
Commenting on stage 14, South African Louis Meintjes said: “The last 10 km was very fast and quite scary and unfortunately towards the end a lot of the riders were in front of me causing me to get caught up in the gap and lose quite a bit of time. Hopefully tomorrow will be better, let’s see.”
The peloton will be tackling stage 15 tomorrow which presents a unique challenge on this year’s Tour. With a considerable amount of climbing on the 189.5km route, you would be foolish to think tomorrow is a day for the climbers. With a downhill finish that extends over 31km, watch out for some of the most tactical riding of the Tour so far. Look out for breakaways, aggressive riding and a sprint to the finish.
