Pioneering technique invented by DHA cardiologists

Procedure named Dubai Technique as a sign of love and respect to the country.

United Arab Emirates, Dubai, November 18, 2013: Dubai Health Authority cardiologists have pioneered a technique to successfully treat complex  arterial blockages.

The technique known as ‘Dubai Technique' is now being taught to cardiologists from Europe through training sessions that are conducted in Dubai Hospital.

Dr Talib Majwal,  Consultant, Interventional Cardiology & Director of Interventional Cardiology, Dubai Heart Center at Dubai Hospital pioneered this technique in January this year and so far he has treated 80 patients using this method. He has also presented this technique is London, France, Italy and Germany as well as presented this technique to doctors in Paris via live transmission.

Last week a team of doctors from Austria visited Dubai Hospital to receive training to learn how to use this pioneering technique.

Majwal said: “ We named this technique the Dubai technique as a mark of respect and love to our country. We are received excellent feedback from doctors the world over with regard to this new method to treat complex heart blockages. So far doctors from Austria and Netherlands have visited us to learn this technique.

“Next week another delegation from Austria will visit Dubai to learn this technique and we will provide training to a delegation from Belgium in December. We will continue training programs until May 2014 and we are overwhelmed to see the response of international cardiologists to this technique.”

He said that this technique will be published in a prestigious USA cardiology publication very shortly.

Explaining the technique he said: “ When we began using the ABSORB technique last year, we realized we would modify it to treat complex blockages of the main artery or a branch of the artery. We modified the technique and it worked beautifully to solve complex cases that were otherwise difficult to treat.”

The Dubai technique is a modified version of the ABSORB technique  which uses an insertion of a bioresorbable scaffold into an affected coronary artery to keep it open and thereby promote the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. This procedure is better than using  a ‘stent' into a diseased artery because the stent is a permanent fixture that remains in the blood vessel, making the vessel similar to a cage, the scaffold progressively dissolves over a period of two years, leaving the artery widened but with no trace of the device left.

Dr Majwal said: “ The Dubai technique is a modified version of the ABSORB technique that also ensures the artery is widened using a scaffold that dissolves over a period of time, but the technique used is modified and it is mainly used for complex arterial blockages of the main artery or the branch of a main artery.”

He said the technique has been well received and is being used by various European countries now. “Our aim now is to train doctors from different parts of the world to use this technique so that cardiac patients with complex arterial blockages can benefit from this new technique.”
