Experts advise simple, yet more unconventional options to improve dental care when on-the-go and brushing isn't possible UAE, November 13, 2013: A recent survey on the dental hygiene habits of UAE residents found that over half (56 %) of those surveyed fail to brush their teeth when they're travelling, working or simply are tired.1 The survey findings, commissioned by Wrigley's Extra Oral Healthcare Program (EOHP), demonstrate that there's an obvious need for improved oral care in the Emirates, where tooth decay affects nearly 80 percent of the population, making it the most chronic health condition in the country.2 Commenting on the survey findings, Dr. Mais Al Aswad, EOHP's dental representative in the UAE, stated: “While many people find it challenging to maintain their dental care regimen when busy, there are several easy alternatives that can assist in maintaining proper oral hygiene. For example, if you're on a flight, have a long car drive ahead or are deskbound, chewing sugar-free gum can help keep your mouth clean and fresh. Sugar-free gum also fits well in all carry-ons and handbags, so travelling can't really be an excuse for poor oral hygiene!” Dr. Mais continued, “We know that saliva—stimulated by chewing sugar-free gum—can help prevent tooth decay by washing away food debris that feed bacteria in your mouth. While brushing obviously remains the best course of action to keep your mouth healthy, chewing sugar-free gum such as Extra is a secondary, viable and effective method of keeping your mouth clean and healthy when you are on the go.” Keeping your Mouth Clean and Healthy on the Go - Top Tips - Pack a travel sized toothbrush and toothpaste and brush your teeth whilst travelling, on the plane for example
- Avoid eating sugary foods and soda drinks, which lower the PH level in your mouth, making it more susceptible to tooth decay and cavities forming
- Chew sugar free gum such as Extra after eating and drinking, which raises the PH levels in your mouth, helping to prevent tooth decay, and to maintain a clean, healthy and fresh mouth.
