First DNA study of ancient Eastern Arabians reveals malaria adaptation - study

People living in ancient Eastern Arabia appear to have developed resistance to malaria following the appearance of agriculture in the region around five thousand years ago, a new study reveals.   DNA analysis of the remains of four individuals from Tylos-period Bahrain (300 BCE to 600 CE) - the first ancient genomes from Eastern Arabia - revealed the malaria-protective G6PD Mediterranean mutation in three samples.   The discovery of the G6PD Mediterranean mutation in ancient Bahrainis suggests that many people in the region’s ancient populations may have enjoyed protection from malaria. Dubai, UAE, 29 January 2024: 202 students from 24 UAE schools made a splash at Emirates Aviation University’s seventh Water Rocket Competition, held in collaboration with Boeing.   Students in grades 11 and 12 from schools across the UAE built rockets using materials at hand. Each year, the challenge for participants is to launch water rockets at a 45-degree angle, powered solely by water and air pressure. December 13, 2023 – The American University of Sharjah (AUS) College of Arts and Sciences announced that its graduates in biology, chemistry and environmental sciences accepted to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at St. George’s University (SGU), Grenada, will receive an automatic $30,000 scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to AUS students who enroll in the four-year MD program at either of SGU’s campuses, which are located in Grenada, West Indies, and Northumbria, Newcastle, UK. AUS alumni will also have the opportunity to apply for a further International Peace Bursary prior to enrolling, which will be awarded based on financial need.
