Families were invited via a door-to-door and SMS campaign to the session -called ‘Weekly Tweets’ - which was held from 3pm-5pm at Dubai’s Mushriff Park, on Friday, 26thDecember.The activities of the day included an awareness session and lecture presented by Dr Rami Al Khateeb of the School of Environment and Health Sciences at the Canadian University, during which the participants had the chance to win a range of prizes. There were also a variety of fun activities for children - including one that showedhow household items like plastic bottles can be recycled into toys using a little creativity. Another fun filled event was the team building activity that asked kids and adults to work together to use recycled materials, such as carton boxes, to create a building or tower, with the execution being awarded a prize. In addition to these activities, light snacks and refreshments were served to adults. Eng. Salah Amiri, Asst. Director General for Environmental & Public Health Services Sector said; “Families can play a leading role in driving environmental stewardship in Dubai. At Dubai Municipality, we endeavour to spare no effort to give them all the information they need about how to recycle with maximum effectiveness. ‘Weekly Tweets’ was an event for the entire family, adults and children alike. With engaging activities and competitions, we ensured that over the course of an enjoyable afternoon, communities would get the information they need to help protect our city by upholding environmentally responsible principles. These chats can then be followed through via Dubai Municipality's social media platforms.' Mr Amiri, continued; “With major international events such as the World Expo 2020 around the corner, and Dubai’s continued economic resurgence, the eyes of the world are on our Emirate. We have an obligation to protect the environment, for ourselves, our children and for future generations, and to set an example to others. That is why we re-launched the ‘My City… My Environment’ campaign - to build upon the success of its original iteration and to greatly expand its impact”. Under the theme: ‘Recycle Me... Join the Recycling Movement’, the ‘My City… My Environment’ recycling awareness campaign was re-launched following a positive response from the Dubai community. Aiming to drastically reduce waste by focusing on the collection and segregation of recyclable waste at source - a particularly important priority because of the Emirate’s rapid economic growth - the campaign encompasses a powerful and multifaceted marketing campaign, centred around public relations, a media burst, a road show at selected malls and Union Coops, social media activation, family friendly events with competitions, live entertainment, and awareness sessions. It is targeting the following areas of Dubai: Nad Al Hammar, Jumeirah 1, 2 & 3, Al Safa 1 & 2, Umm Suqueim 1, 2 & 3, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif and Al Barsha 2 & 3. Dubai Municipality is a leading driver of growth and evolution of the Emirate of Dubai, working tirelessly to keep the city green and sparing no effort to educate the community - with the ultimate goal of ensuring pollution-free, liveable and safe environments.
