Dubai, UAE, October 30, 2016:   As part of its continued efforts to improve the health and overall well-being of its students, Al Mawakeb Schools, managed by academic solutions provider Academia Management Solutions International (AMSI), recently conducted an awareness campaign to tackle neck muscle stress caused by excessive use of gadgets.

The program aimed at increasing awareness amongst the student community, and teaching and non-teaching staff about the pitfalls of over-use of smartphones and other connected devices. Peeping into brightly-lid screens for a long, uninterrupted time, especially viewing at an angle inclined downwards, causes ‘tension headaches’ due to sustained pressure on the neck muscles. The ubiquitous use of smartphones is giving rise to a phenomenon titled ‘text neck’ - referring to the hunched posture we adopt as we stare at our phones.

According to a research, smartphones users spend an average of two to four hours a day with their heads propped down. Another research concludes that bending the head at a 60 degree angle to look at a phone screen exerts 60 lbs, or 27 kg worth of pressure on the part of the spine above the shoulders.

Apart from being a physiological hazard, the practice further disturbs the psychological health of student and hinders academic and co-curricular performance. The campaign at Al Mawakeb Schools educated students on moderate-intensity exercises to cure neck stress. Presentations demonstrating best practices and the importance of detecting and countering neck stress were screened to students, encouraging them to use the information and engage with friends and family members to raise awareness. Students also researched on how to optimally use smartphones, and the importance of balancing use of digital gadgets with other physical exercises, recreational activities, and participating in sports.

Al Mawakeb schools is committed to grooming inspired and healthy students who emerge as productive members of society. It is geared towards harnessing the advantages of digital connectivity and technology, and minimizing its harmful effects through participative and informative campaigns and events.
