United Arab Emirates, Dubai, October 10, 2013:  DHA experts advocated the importance of early detection in the battle against breast cancer.

The experts highlighted that early treatment is the best way to preserve breasts, battle the cancer and is also helpful for those women who need partial or total breast reconstruction as early diagnosis gives plastic surgeons several clinical options to preserve the natural shape and function of the breasts.

Dr Moaza Al Hattawi, chairperson of the DHA Breast Cancer Campaign said: “The average age of breast cancer in the UAE is much younger than the average age in many western countries. Therefore, the first mammogram should take place at 37 years of age, if normal, the next one can take place at the age of 40 and then every two years thereafter. Those with a family history of breast cancer should begin screening ten years after the first case of cancer is detected in the family. For e.g. if someone's sister has breast cancer at 40, that person should start screening at the age of 30.”

She said on an average, 30 per cent of  breast cancer cases received in Dubai Hospital are late diagnosis and the main reason is lack of awareness and cultural sensitivity.

Al Hattawi said women need to be aware that the earlier the breast cancer is detected, the better is the outcome. “ With advances in science, the insertions are minimum, there are high changes of curing the disease as well as preserving the breasts. Delay in treatment can cause the cancer to spread and often saving the breasts also becomes difficult.”

Dr Marwan Ahmad Al Zarouni, Head of Plastic Surgery Unit and Wound & Stoma Care Unit at Rashid Hospital, said: “Post partial or total mastectomy there are several ways of reconstruction. Early detection also helps in breast reconstruction as it gives the plastic surgeon various options to preserve the natural shape and function of the breasts. Functions include capability to breast feed, nipple sensation which is achieved through preservation of nipples.”

He advocated the importance of regular screening especially for women with high risk factors. “Early puberty( before 10 yrs of age) is one of the risk factors that can lead to breast lumps due to high levels of oestrogen hormone in the body. The lumps can be benign or malignant. Late menopause and pregnancy after the age of 40 are also risk factors for breast cancer. The link between morbid obesity and breast cancer is well established.”

Al Zarouni elaborated and said: “Poor lifestyle which includes lack of exercise, fast-food culture, stress etc. are risk factors for several diseases including breast cancer. In today's times, people need to lead a healthy lifestyle, take care of their health and actively undertake regular screenings so that they can detect diseases early on.”

The experts discussed this during the DHA twitter clinic @DHA_Dubai. The next live twitter clinic will take place from DHA's stand at Gitex on the 20th of October at 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
