Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 17 December 2015: Global Village, the leading cultural shopping and entertainment destination for families in the region, announced the winners of its new creative community initiative called ‘Project Dirham’ which engaged with schools across the UAE. To celebrate Global Village’s 20th season and also the UAE’s 44th National Day, ‘Project Dirham’ challenged students across the UAE to paint and embellish metal plates engraved with one of four national symbols that are inspired by the UAE Dirham coin. The symbols include the Falcon, Dhow, Dallah and Oryx which were created into unique works of art by groups of 5 to 10 students each. The top 3 winning schools received monetary prizes intended to improve their art programmes and participate in increasing of students’ creativity worth AED 50,000, AED 30,000 and AED 20,000 respectively. The 10 shortlisted schools attended the event at Global Village where Mr. Ahmed Al Marri, Director of Operations at Global Village, with the assistance of Globo announced the 3 winners and presented them with their amazing prizes. The top 3 schools where Al Qudwa school from Fujairah in first place, GEMS Winchester school from Dubai in second place and the Millennium School from Dubai in third place. Global Village produced and distributed 750 pieces of each design, which led to the participation of more than 70 Schools from around the UAE in ‘Project Dirham’ with more than 15,000 students. More than 1,500 works of art entered in the ‘Project Dirham’ competition and have been installed into a large piece of art, which represents the iconic logo of “Dubai”. The 4.5m (h)x 10m (w) art installation with a total of 2,400 plates witnessed three months of work to construct it and it weighs 10 tonnes with the plates installed on it as well as its base, it will stay on display at the center of Global Village opposite to UAE pavilion till the end of the 20th Season at Global Village. All 15,000 students who participated in the project also received free entry tickets of Global Village as well as certificates of participations. In addition, the 10 finalist schools, including the three winners, received a trophy as well as goody bags filled with fun gifts from Global Village. ‘Project Dirham’ followed on from the success of last year’s ‘Project Dallah’ which celebrated the 43rd UAE National Day and saw students creatively paint ceramic customized Dallahs. Both campaigns are part of Global Village’s continued initiative of community involvement and development.
