ADOPT A CAMP RAMADAN CARE PACKAGES 2015 ORGANISED ON 7,8,9TH JULY AT THE REPTON SCHOOL, DUBAI ----- ARTICLE BY NITYASHRI SANKARAN, A GRADE 7 STUDENT AT THE DELHI PRIVATE SCHOOL, SHARJAH It was a pleasure and a memorable experience being part of this charity initiative as part of celebration of HH Sheikh Zayed Humanitarian Day, organized by Adopt a camp in association with the Dubai Municipality on the 7, 8, 9 th of July 2015 at the repton school Dubai and titled “Adopt a camp ramadan care packages” The Adopt-a-Camp Foundation (AAC) is an internationally recognized and registered foundation created to meaningfully improve the lives of the men who build the beautiful cities we live in and through them, to reach out and aid the diverse communities from which they come. Adopt-a-Camp has been working with labourers in labour camps for 10 years and currently has 53 camps and 57,400+ men under its wing. This year's event was extra-special because it was for our city's municipality workers. Plus, it was a complete surprise for them! After a day's shift of sweeping the roads, clearing the trash, brooming the pavements, etc., 2000 municipality cleaners got onto their buses thinking they're going back to their labour camps. Instead, the buses brought them to Repton School where volunteers were lined up waiting with massive grins to gift each man a hefty Care Package. it was a treat and huge boxes full of new gifts from smiling volunteers! The Care Packages are all items requested by the men as being items that will give them a fresh start in life: new mattress, pillows and bedlinen (to replace their lice-infested ones), new towels, new steel plate and cup (so that they don't have to eat off aluminium foil anymore), new clothes, three months' worth of toiletries, a month's worth of energy food items to help through this summer Ramadan, disinfectant, and much, much more. Over 30 substantial items go into each Care Package. This is a gift of dignity. I volunteered with my friends for the packing event on 8th July where the boxes were neatly packed with all the items one by one, assembled and taped, ready to be given off! Then because I had sponsored few packages and items, we were invited on 9th to present them to the workers and it was visible from their bright and grateful faces that due to our amazing, caring efforts, Adopt-a-Camp campaign has indeed made a real difference in the lives of thousands of labourers, their families and communities. We should always strive to do our bit towards improving the quality of lives of others and share our blessings.
