New Stations to Seek Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification Abu Dhabi-UAE: 2 November, 2013 - ADNOC Distribution inaugurated today, two environment-friendly service stations - Yas 1 and Yas 2 –at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The two stations are located on either side of Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, the main road running through Yas Island. The new stations were inaugurated with the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Al Suweidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Chairman of ADNOC Distribution, Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, Chief Executive Officer, ADNOC Distribution, number of senior officials from ADNOC Distribution and high level representatives. ADNOC Distribution utilized the latest and most accurate standards in design and operations to conserve natural and energy resources in the construction and fit out of the Yas 1 and Yas 2 service stations. As part of this priority, the two service stations have been built with the use of locally manufactured bricks, aluminium, glass and other construction materials, as more than 50% of the project's construction materials were sourced from local manufacturers. ADNOC Distribution is seeking to acquire the LEED Gold certification for the new ‘green' ADNOC service stations to validate their compliance to globally recognised standards in the measurement of design, construction and the operation of eco-friendly buildings. ADNOC Distribution's latest initiative articulates its commitment to the environment and sustainability in line with the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. The company's initiative to use compressed natural gas(CNG) as an alternative fuel in Abu Dhabi, followed by the establishment of maintenance centres to help vehicles run on natural gas are some of its noteworthy breakthroughs in sustainability that have won international accolades. Adopting a creative approach in implementing environment-related projects, ADNOC Distribution spearheads waste-recycling through bins working on solar power and ensures reduced emissions from pumps and tanks. The stations have installed electric vehicle charging stations in its parking garage with 50% of its car parks shaded to reduce heat island's effect. Commenting on the landmark opening of ‘green' service stations, Abdullah Salem Al Dhaheri, Chief Executive Officer, ADNOC Distribution, said: “ADNOC Distribution is proud of our environment focus that we have managed to implement at every step of our long journey. Our achievements are even more significant given the fact that ADNOC is among the biggest energy distributors in the local and regional landscape today, which is dominated by sizeable logistical challenges for such eco-friendly operations. “We are happy to tackle any challenge to fulfil the vision of our leadership under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. Our strategies are backed by our mission to ensure sustainable development and maintain our natural resources for future generations to enjoy.” The new stations function on the principle of increased efficiency and reduced energy consumption. With this in mind, the facilities are equipped with advanced waste-recycling and waste-disposal technology, and are fitted out with energy-efficient lamps and air conditioners using non-toxic gases that minimally impact the ozone layer. The building's illumination is 100% LED lighting both inside and out. Also, all of the lighting installations at the service station are light-emitting diodes, which last up to 10 years and use 80% less energy than similar lighting systems. Machines to reduce excessive water consumption at the stations ensure the regulated use of natural resources. In this regards, up to 80 % of car wash water will be recycled onsite and features water-saving fixtures with automated controls that reduce use by more than 35%. Vegetation requiring minimal irrigation are being planted in the surrounding environment to provide a green cover. Care has also been taken to install environment-friendly air filters across all facilities in both stations to ensure optimal indoor air quality. Dyeing materials and paints used will also conform to low emission specifications with high efficiency energy saving ACs are being used. Following the launch of Yas 1 and Yas 2, ADNOC Distribution aims to open several more green stations across the emirate. Earlier, the company had set up mobile service stations to cope with heightened demand during special events, such as the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit or concerts at Yas Island's du Arena and du Forum. The company is in on-going coordination with government authorities to establish service stations in newly developed areas as well as high-density areas. A gas station is also in the pipeline for Saadiyat Island, the home of Abu Dhabi's developing cultural district.
