Dubai, December 10, 2014: The ‘selfie’ has become such a ubiquitous term that it has now been added to the English dictionary, indicating that, love them or loathe them, selfies are here to stay. These all too familiar images are becoming a daily feature of social media sites as Hollywood- and your less famous Facebook friends - strike their best pose for the camera. A selfie is intended to show the most flattering version of you, so knowing the best techniques is essential for capturing your best shot. It can however, be quite tricky taking a good picture when you’re the one holding the camera and it’s not always as easy as the selfie-pros make it look. With the festive season around the corner and all those parties you’ll be attending, there is every chance your selfie quota will soar. To ensure that your selfie is a Christmas cracker, we’ve compiled some do’s and don’ts for taking the perfect selfie this holiday season. Do: - Check your lighting - One of the basics of good photography is lighting, and it can make the difference between a great shot and a very unflattering one. Standing outside or next to a window will provide the best lighting conditions, but just make sure that there isn’t too much backlighting in the frame. In other words, don’t attempt to take your selfie directly in front of the sun!
- Hold still - Avoid blurry, out-of-focus images by keeping as still as possible. Yes, this can be challenging when you’re holding your phone with one hand and have the other expertly placed on your hip, but standing still will ensure a clearer shot. If you find that using one hand is difficult try using both hands. This will give you better control and your arms will provide the perfect frame for the picture.
- Take two, three or four - Do you think even the most beautiful celebrities get the perfect selfie the first time round? If you don’t like the first picture, keep trying until you capture your must flattering shot.
Don’t: - Have a busy, cluttered background - Untidy spaces and cluttered backdrops don’t make for winning selfies so make sure you have a neat space in the back of your shot. Solid colored walls and interesting backdrops are recommended.
- Ignore the angle - even the most photogenic of people have their bad side, so make sure your best angle is in shot. To get the most flattering image, take the selfie from above and pop your chin forward with your head slightly tilting to the side. It may sound unnatural but trust us, this is a simple trick that works wonders and will give you a model-worthy look.
- Try too hard - Selfies should be fun and naturally reflect your personality, so don’t over-think the pose - a newsfeed full of uniform selfies isn’t interesting for anyone. Just relax, be yourself and smile!
