Carefusion Introduces New Medication, Patient Safety SolutionsTto GCC Region At Arab Health

New Technologies for Medication Management, Respiratory Care and Infection Prevention to Simplify and Standardize Hospital Processes

Dubai, UAE; Jan. 27, 2014 – CareFusion, a leading global medical technology company, today introduced several new health care solutions to help hospitals in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region improve medication management, respiratory care and infection prevention processes.

The new health care solutions help to solve challenges for hospitals in safely storing, dispensing and administering medication, improving respiratory care practices and improving infection prevention protocols. While the new solutions ultimately benefit patients, the technologies were designed to create a more cohesive partnership among nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapists, surgeons, IT and hospital administration to streamline processes and reduce variation in care. In addition, CareFusion has developed interoperability solutions to enable its devices and technologies to share data with other health care information technology systems from companies including Cerner and Epic.

“Our technologies that we are showcasing at Arab Health help hospitals standardize and simplify their processes, which help improve safety and efficiency of caring for patients,” said Maher Elhassan, vice president for the Middle East and South Africa region for CareFusion, based in Dubai. “Through improving medication management, respiratory care and infection prevention, we can help hospitals improve the quality and reduce the cost of care.”

CareFusion will showcase these new technologies and solutions during the Arab Health Congress, being 27-30 January at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre. CareFusion will exhibit in hall 5 booth #5C25.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENTWith new Pyxis Pharmogistics® software to help manage inventory and workflow, combined with the new Pyxis® ES platform, CareFusion is introducing its most advanced medication management solution to date to the GCC region. Pharmaceutical inventory management is a critical component to controlling costs, and Pyxis Pharmogistics software from CareFusion can help manage the right amount of inventory for a hospital or health system. The software enables near real-time visibility across a health system to help hospitals keep costs down and free-up pharmacy staff to redeploy to clinical activity. All medications can be scanned upon receipt at the hospital with Pyxis Pharmogistics software creating an enterprise-wide inventory management model to help ensure optimized inventory levels and visibility across the hospital or health system.

The new Pyxis® ES platform features centralized system management capabilities not previously seen in other medication management systems. New integration capabilities with existing hospital systems provide one system formulary and enhanced user management across the health system. The system also provides patient-centric clinical workflow efficiencies with an improved user interface that provides comprehensive medication information in one place. The foundation of the Pyxis ES platform is composed of the Pyxis Enterprise server, the Pyxis MedStation ES system and CareFusion Knowledge Portal. The new Pyxis® Anesthesia ES system extends the ES platform to include medication storage and dispensing in operating rooms, where secure access to anesthesia medication is of critical importance.

Through the new Pyxis® ES Link software, both nursing and pharmacy have near real-time visibility to all medications. The application can be run through a web browser on any Internet-enabled computer. This will help reduce inquiries from nursing to pharmacy on medication orders and can help reduce unnecessary refill orders that are often sent while the original medication order is still being processed and delivered. In addition to increased visibility, nursing is able to remotely queue and waste medications, further optimizing workflow and reducing time at the Pyxis MedStation system.

CareFusion is also introducing new intelligent IV pumps to the Middle East region. The Alaris® VP plus Guardrails® volumetric infusion pump from CareFusion delivers exclusive benefits through in-line pressure monitoring and the Guardrails® suite of safety software. In-line pressure monitoring improves the early detection of occlusions, by reducing time to alarm, and can help reduce sub-therapeutic medication and the risk of IV complications such as extravasation or infiltration. The Alaris VP is available in 17 languages. CareFusion also offers the Alaris® System, which is the only infusion system to provide bi-directional interoperability with electronic health records for both large volume and syringe pumps.

RESPIRATORY CARECareFusion is debuting two new ventilator technologies at Arab Health as well. The new iX5™ ventilator helps clinicians make the right decisions within a complex, sensory rich hospital environment. The proprietary iX5 ClearView™ screen provides clinicians relevant, real-time patient data. From a distance, the clinician can quickly assess the patient through simplified color-coded lung models and patient data. The iX5 ventilator also helps ensure proper attention to alarm management to enable easy call-to-action prompting and combat alarm fatigue. The iX5 ventilator ventilates any patient, from neonates to adult patients both invasively and noninvasively. The durable, high-performance iX5 ventilator provides hospitals with long-term performance and serviceability to ensure an in-service fleet at a low cost of total ownership.

Also being highlighted is the LTV® 1200 ventilator Rolling GoPack, an essential part of any emergency preparedness plan. The LTV 1200 ventilator can help provide a ventilation response to mass casualty incidents—from influenza outbreaks to biological warfare attacks to natural disasters. The small, lightweight ventilator provides both invasive and noninvasive applications for patients weighing more than 5 kilograms. It is a pick-up-and-go solution that can travel with patients from field care to transport to the intensive care unit (ICU). The LTV 1200 is packaged with all the items that needed in an emergency response situation, including a durable Pelican Storm Case with easy access for charging the ventilator while in storage, a retractable handle and wheels for easy mobility and a SprintPack™ Lithium Ion battery system and an array of consumables for immediate use situations.

CareFusion is also launching the Vyntus® CPX Professional cardio-pulmonary exercise system (CPET) to help physicians take the complexity out of cardio-pulmonary measurement. This next generation, high specification CPET device, developed in combination with the SentrySuite® Diagnostic Data Management Platform, serves both the expert and inexperienced user, making it a uniquely suited tool within the health care system. Together with the SentrySuite® software, CareFusion's goal is to bring the new CPET technology test into broader acceptance as a standard diagnostic tool through customization tailored to expert as well as novice users.

INFECTION PREVENTIONCareFusion is active in the infection prevention space with preoperative skin preparation products that reduce the number of microorganisms on the skin, which helps to decrease the risk of infection for a range of minor and major medical procedures. ChloraPrep® skin prep products from CareFusion contain 2 percent chlorhexidine gluconate and 70 percent isopropyl alcohol in single-use sterile applicators. ChloraPrep products provide rapid-acting and persistent antiseptic activity against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, while allowing an evidence–based & standardized best practice application method.

In addition, CareFusion will be exhibiting MaxPlus® Clear needleless IV connectors, which combined with best clinical practice, help to reduce the risk of catheter-related bloodstream infections and occlusion in patients receiving infusion therapy. CareFusion also provides world-class disposable infusion products to worldwide medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical industries. CareFusion's portfolio includes the SmartSite® needle-free valves, the Texium® Closed Male Luer system, the KippMed® NAC needleless connectors, and a wide range of components, subassemblies and customized private label infusion devices.  These components provide a wide range of configurations for multiple applications.

SURVEILLANCE AND ANALYTICSA live demonstration of The CareFusion Knowledge Portal will also be at CareFusion's exhibit. The CareFusion Knowledge Portal is a single surveillance and analytics platform for medication management, infusion and respiratory care. The integrated analytics solutions help hospitals manage data and turn it into actionable information to unlock performance, help improve safety and lower costs. The CareFusion Knowledge Portal is an intuitive application for hospitals seeking flexibility in their analytical processes, providing easy access to transaction data.
