Healthy New Year's resolutions to live by

Local nutritionist gives tips for a fit and fab 2014

20 January 2014 – Renowned for her effective inch-loss programs and in-depth food knowledge, Rashi Chowdhary, nutritionist and inch-loss expert, sets out a few New Year's resolutions everybody should live by this year for a fit and fab 2014.

“Many of us most likely travelled over the festive season, over-indulged in everything satisfying and stepped out of our normal exercise routine but that shouldn't stop us from kick-starting a new healthy year. You don't need old-fashioned diets and starvation plans, you simply need a well-balanced eating plan, suited to your situation and lifestyle, and a consistent exercise regime that will help you build muscle and burn fat,” said Rashi.

Rashi shares three resolutions you must add to your 2014 list:

  1. Say NO to the usual 'diet drama' that all of us do for the first few weeks and YES to realistic changes that actually last all year!
  2. Eat till you are full but don't over eat!
Stop eating before you reach that 'I'm so stuffed' feeling. Your brain takes about 20 minutes to realize that your stomach is full. So the trick is to put your fork down when you are around 80% full. Also, remember your stomach is approximately the size of both your palms together! Any extra calories that your body cannot use will instantly get stored as fat for later use! Over eating is one of the major reason why we tend to store fat mainly around our waist!
  3. This year 'think fit' and not just 'skinny'. Being skinny doesn't mean you are healthy!
Always judge your fitness levels by how energetic you feel through the day, the amount of muscle mass you gain and the number of inches you drop.

Rashi also shares a few resolution revamp suggestions:

1) I will 'give up' sugar, drinks and cigarettes...
It is soul crushing to say no to a chocolate frosted cupcakes while your friends are gorging on it. Ask yourself how many times in the past you've tried to shake loose from these habits? Initially it can feel very empowering to 'say no' to all the unhealthy habits but in the long run, this attitude leaves you feeling deprived and desperate. In fact swearing off certain foods can make you think about them even more!

Revamp this resolution! Instead, add a healthy habit this year. For example: instead of saying no to junk food, promise to add a portion of veggies to your dinner or allow yourself to have a healthier breakfast every day! Once you get in the momentum and start seeing some progress, it'll be so much easier to let go of the nasty habits.

2) I will go to the gym thrice a week this year!
Make it a point to level up your life this year!!
'Joining the gym' or 'going thrice a week on a treadmill' is no goal! Set a challenging or a thrilling goal this year. Something that inspires you, something that you look forward to and something you have fun with. Push yourself and get out of your comfort zone.

Revamp this with how many kilometres you want to run, walk, and jog comfortably, how many bur-pees and squats you can do by then end of every 2 weeks and how much body fat you drop every 2 months. Achieving these kind of goals will stimulate you, make you feel the power and witness the progress you want. Just go for it this year!

3) I'm going to lose weight with the new detox cleanse / raw food plan/ no carb diet etc.
The minute you leave this new “miracle diet” YOU WILL GAIN YOUR WEIGHT BACK!
Save your metabolism all that torture. There are no quick fixes so get real and get going! Take responsibility for how you've reached that number you hate seeing on the scale and just get going with making realistic changes that last. Revamp it with a balanced eating plan that suits your lifestyle!

“The New Year is filled with great opportunities and we need to make our bodies as strong as possible in order to make the most out of our life. A healthy body is a happy mind and with these tips and resolutions, everybody can be one step closer to feeling great, everyday,” concluded Rashi.
