Dr Jaco Smith and his friendly team of specialists at the only dental phobia certified clinic in Dubai, have, over the years, seen it all and nothing ever fazes them.  They share the most common dental problems that they encounter in their practice on a regular basis.

Dr Jaco explains, “Many of the problems we see can be easily avoided.  By brushing and flossing twice a day, eating a healthy, balanced diet, staying hydrated and regular hygienist and dental check-ups, as well as educating yourself about good oral hygiene, will keep major dental work at bay”.

  • Bad breath or halitosis is caused by poor oral hygiene: a build-up of bacteria, gum disease, and trapped food in cavities.  Brushing twice a day, flossing and using a tongue scraper will reduce the condition, along with a probiotic gum and mouthwash.
  • Gum disease – again caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking and genetics, can be linked to heart disease and strokes.  It is the main cause of tooth loss in adults.
  • Tooth decay – or cavities are second only to the common cold in the United States.  Failure to brush allows plaque to collect : sugars and carbohydrates stick to the tooth.  Acid erodes tooth enamel and bacteria trapped between the teeth leads to decay.
  • Oral cancer – the fastest growing and most aggressive cancer, often because it is painless, but one of the most treatable if diagnosed early.  The Dental Studio is the first Dubai clinic to offer regular oral cancer screening as part of a dental check-up
  • Mouth sores – usually disappear on their own but if they last more than two weeks have them checked out.  Common sores are canker sores, fever blisters, cold sores, ulcers, thrush, HPV, and Herpes virus
  • Tooth sensitivity and erosion – caused by receding gums, exposed root surfaces, acid attack on enamel, exposure to heat and cold and can lead to cracked teeth, all of which are treatable.
  • Yellowing teeth – causes include smoking, caffeine based drinks and tanins in red wine and tea.  Regular cleaning and hygienist visits help prevent this.
  • Wisdom teeth – our distant ancestors used these extra teeth for chewing raw meat but with today's refined diet are less neccesary.  Some people have no trouble with wisdom teeth but if there is not enough room in the mouth, they form a partial eruption, become infected or impacted, and are best removed.
  • Teeth grinding or bruxism – often caused by stress or anxiety and most often occurs in our sleep.  Left untreated they cause teeth to split or end up as stumps, as well as jaw problems and headaches.
  • Tooth Erosion – common in bulimics when stomach acids erode tooth enamel, causing teeth to become soft and fall out.
  • Toothache and dental emergencies – Don't wait for a toothache to force you to the dentist.  Regular checkups can actually prevent these painful incidents.
