Jan Polanc crosses finish line amongst first group at 100th Giro d’Italia
Monday, 22 May 2017, United Arab Emirates: UAE Team Emirates’ Jan Polanc came 11th after he successfully bridged the gap on the final straight of stage 15 and crossed the finish line as part of the first group of riders. Bob Jungels (Quick - Step Floors) took the sprint win in Bergamo to claim the 15th stage of the Giro d’Italia while Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) keeps the General Classification lead. Commenting on his finish, UAE Team Emirates’ Polanc said: “Today was difficult. The breakaway started at 20 km so the speed was high and most of the peloton was very tired. In the end my legs felt quite good and I managed to bridge the gap on the final straight and finish with the first group - the best riders at the arrival. I am satisfied for now but I know that the third week will be very difficult. I cannot say how it will unfold as it all depends on our performance and how fast we recover after the stages.” UAE Team Emirates have a day off racing after 15 stages, as Monday will see the third and final rest day of the Giro before stage 16 begins in Rovetta marking the toughest and final week of the Grand Tour race. Tuesday will mark the 16th stage - 222 km long starting in Rovetta and finishing in Bormeo. The stage consists of three mountains (one of them known as the ‘Queen Climb of Europe’) and a steep descent for the finale. The queen stage will feature a double pass over the Stelvio, one passage over the summit and then another via the Umbrail before a long descent to Bormio.
