Hundreds Screened Through “Diabetes: Let's beat it” Initiative

Newly opened RAK Diabetes Centre in Dubai screens over 500 employees of Dubai World Trade Centre, in partnership with Emirates Diabetes Society. The prevention and awareness campaign was part of the Centre’s mission to beat diabetes and contribute towards a healthier UAE population.

Dubai UAE, December 22, 2015:  The recently opened RAK Diabetes Centre, Dubai, carried out a massive prevention and awareness campaign against diabetes with a free health check-up for the staff and tenants of Dubai World Trade Centre, in partnership with Emirates Diabetes Society. The initiative will be taken to other areas as well with the aim to educate the public with emphasis on the importance for preventive screening in order to avoid diabetes, along with other related health issues, especially chronic diseases (hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, etc.).

The free checkup, organised at DWTC premises, accommodated around 500 people who had lined up for the screening.Thecomprehensive campaign included blood sugar screening, BMI assessment and consultation with a general practitioner, an endocrinologist and a dietitian.

Participants were especially appreciative for their extensive focus and education on both diabetes and other chronic diseases, as well as the importance to have a healthy lifestyle with a balanced nutrition and exercise. They also learnt the importance of screening, and were explained screening guidelines for various ages. These included:

  • Blood Pressure: People between the ages of 40 - 60 should get their blood pressure checked every year;
  • Cholesterol: Those over the age of 34 you should be checked every 2 years.
  • Diabetes: Screening must be done every 3 years for those over 45 years and every year if they have family history of diabetes.

Those already suffering from weight issues, high cholesterol levels, diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, or certain other conditions, may need to have regular follow-ups with their specific healthcare providers.

Aina Picornell, Head of RAK Diabetes Center, said: “It is surprising how many people actually either delay screening until the inevitable happens, or simply push it at the back of their minds because they think it is not important enough. But we must realise that regular health checkup is one of the requisites of a healthy, illness-free lifestyle. Simultaneously, we need to eat healthy (and also avoid harsh diets), sleep well and follow a good exercise regime. I believe that with this free screening programme, we have managed to drive this point across to hundreds of people, who eventually go on to make a healthier UAE population. We are very grateful to DWTC to allow us to carry out this campaign to increase diabetes and healthy lifestyle awareness”.

With a mission to increase awareness, education, reduce incidence of diabetes (in overweight and pre-diabetic patients), and avoid complications due to a late diagnosis of diabetes,RAK Diabetes Centre focuses on providing complete medical care, education and support. The Centre offers a holistic approach to diabetes management, which includes preventing diabetes as well as related complications. The Center offers Comprehensive and holistic Diabetes Care by providing access to a multidisciplinary team including Cardiologists, Ophthalmologists, Endocrinologists, Diabetes Educator, Dietitian, Podiatrist, Internist and General practitioner all under one roof.
