New school gear adds to a child's confidence, ninety per cent parents confirm

Nearly fifty percent families spend an average of AED 400 on new school supplies

Dubai, August 26, 2015: With the new school season dawning upon us, Centrepoint, the region’s largest fashion retailer, conducted a survey to understand the latest parent insight when shopping for back-to-school supplies and their spending patterns. The survey, conducted with over 14,000 customers, points out than ninety percent respondents believe that a new school gear boosts a child’s confidence when starting the new academic year.

According to the survey, fifty per cent families spend an average of AED 400 on new school supplies each. In addition, the results highlight that children opt for items mainly because of the character on the item and school bag; shoes and uniform are the top three items of purchase by families across the UAE.

“The survey has given us insight into a parent’s priorities and spending patterns at large. We are confident that at Centrepoint, families can spend the average amount of AED 400 and easily find the top 3 items cited in the survey. With a wide range of products available for the back-to-school collection, families will be spoilt for choice,” said Simon Cooper, Head of Centrepoint.

About thirty five percent respondents suggest that they shop for the new supplies only two weeks before school opening, while twenty one percent said they shop a month in advance of the new academic year.

“At Centrepoint, we start offering the new back-to-school supplies nearly five weeks prior to the start of the new school year. Residents are frequently travelling all over the summer and keeping in mind the different planning and purchasing patterns, we begin to offer the products as early as possible, allowing parents to shop as per their convenience,” adds Cooper.

About sixty five percent of parents continue to choose a store and prefer shopping in-person than online for back-to-school supplies.

“There are several ways to prepare and settle a child into the new school year. One of the most popular is the excitement of having new school gear for the academic year. However, the emotional quotient of the parent with the child will also act as a crucial confidence builder. If parents are calm and don’t let children pick up on their insecurities or concerns, children will reflect the confidence, comfort and calmness when starting school,” explained Dr. Marina Joseph, Clinical Psychologist, Zulekha Hospital.

Most schools are scheduled to open for the new academic year in the first week of September and expert tips are available online and will continue until the end of the first week of September with three-four tips every week. The collection will also stay in-store until the end of first week of September.
