DUBAI : Al Maya Group is keen to increase its imports of Jordanian vegetables and other products, Group Director, Mr. Kamal Vachani informed Jordan’s Consul General in Dubai.

Jordan’s Consul General H.E. Dr Saed Radaideh, visited the group’s supermarket at Murooj Complex in Dubai on Tuesday, 9th December 2014. The consul general assured his full support to assist Al Maya Group for increasing food items imports from Jordan.

The value of Jordan’s fruit and vegetable exports during the first three quarters of this year went up by more than 20 per cent to JD410 million (US$577 million) from JD340 million (US$476) during the same period of last year, according to official foreign trade figures released last month by the Jordan’s Department of Statistics.

“Our vegetable imports from Jordan include tomatoes, cauliflower, Baby Marrow, Sweet Pepper and chilies. We see increasing demand for Jordanian vegetables in the UAE and imports could be increased multifold,” Mr. Kamal Vachani said.
Tomatoes rank number one with more than 35 per cent of total vegetable exports value of Jordan, according to Jordan Exporters and Producers Association for Fruits and Vegetables.

Official foreign trade data shows that Jordan is currently a major supplier of fruits and vegetables to the Gulf Arab market, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE, according to official foreign trade data.
Al Maya Group, the UAE-based business conglomerate, has more than 40 supermarkets in the GCC countries in addition to other businesses. The group recently expanded its reach in Oman and Abu Dhabi by opening new outlets this year.

“We are planning to continue expanding our network of supermarkets next year,” Mr. Kamal Vachani said.
