Abu Dhabi – 23 April 2014 Songkran is a celebration marking the traditional Thai New Year, falling every 13 April. It is a time for spiritual cleansing and renewal, a blessed period accompanied by a promise of fresh and positive start. The word Songkran is from the Sanskrit language and means the passage of the sun from one sign of the Zodiac to another. The most famous aspect of the Songkran celebrations is the splashing of water. The custom originates from spring cleaning aspect of Songkran and using the blessed water to splash friends and loved ones is a sign of bringing good fortune wishes for the remainder of the year.
