Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center Appoints Emirati Poet as Consultant for Cultural Studies and Colloquial Literature

UAE, Dubai, 16 September 2013: The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center, a specialist centre created for the preservation, revival and promotion of Emirati heritage and culture, has announced the appointment of leading Emirati poet Salem Al Zumr, as its first Consultant for Cultural Studies and Colloquial Literature.

The move comes as the Center looks to strengthen its team across the broadest area of cultural and heritage knowledge and enhance its mission to become the leading Emirati heritage conservation body that is committed to promoting the UAE's national culture.

As an Emirati poet, author and journalist, Salem Al Zumr, comes with impeccable credentials to provide his unique insights, know-how and experience to the Center.

Salem is a Law Graduate but chose to pursue a career in poetry and literary art. Driven by his passion, Salem's first work in traditional colloquial poetry was published in 1992, followed by a classical Arabic book of poetry “Aghla Al Rasayel”, and his latest volume “Ta'aer Al Shaer” which was published in 2010. Meanwhile Salem has continued to write for various publications in addition to hosting a number of cultural TV and radio shows.  

Commenting on his new role, Salem said “This new role is a great honour for me and I consider it an appreciation for my works in the areas of colloquial literary, poetry and innovation and a privilege to be engaged by a Center named after such a great man as Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. 

“I am confident that joining the Center will help me to achieve a number of my aspirations in preserving, documenting, highlighting and teaching Emirati heritage using poetry to help it become a more eminent part of our country's identity and Arabian origins to ensure that nationals from both current and future generations can learn and benefit from it.”

The appointment comes as Abdullah Hamdan bin Dalmook CEO of the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre announced that HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, and the Chairman of Dubai's Executive Council, has approved the center's structure. This is an important step in ensuring the flawless implementation of the Center's strategy to make it a highly credible source for studies and research in national history, culture and heritage.

Commenting on the new appointment, Abdullah Hamdan bin Dalmook said: “We are proud to welcome one the Emirates most talented national resources onboard with the appointment of the hugely respected poet and author Salem Al Zumr.

“The Center will be enormously enriched by his valuable contributions and Salem's lifelong experience and talents will help to further ensure a distinct Emirati identity to the project that will help ensure deeper knowledge among both current and future generations'.

“By appointing Salem to this new role, we will continue to preserve our national heritage, ensure we preserve our rich history and interpret our culture in an exciting and engaging manner”, bin Dalmook added.

Colloquial poetry is known to be one of the most expressive forms of Arabic literary art and is deeply rooted to its Arabian origins and is highly, distinct in its content, descriptive form and historic values and can also be a mirror of the reality of everyday life in UAE's society.

Center CEO Abdullah Hamdan bin Dalmook explained the importance of preserving such a unique heritage which originated centuries ago in the UAE and across the Arabian Peninsula and added that preserving colloquial poetry is one of the center's prime targets.
