In support of Earth Day 2014, Villa, Rihab and Rimal Rotana organized an awareness session with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) on the following topics: “Recycle old phone, sustainability and environmental issues”. After the sessions, colleagues from the 3 properties visited Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, in order to learn and explore in firsthand our vital role to protect and restore the fauna and flora of such natural heritage in Dubai. Before the sessions started, colleagues from the 3 Rotana hotels recycled their old cell phones and accessories in support of Earth Day 2014. UAE residents toss thousands of cell phones each year in favour of newer technology. All these discarded phones remain unattended to and can harm the environment. In 2009, EEG encourages recycling of mobile phones to ensure a sustainable use of natural resources and to reduce pollution. The information is propagated through Dialogue Sessions with school students and employees of companies year round. In 2013, 6,919 gallons of oil has been saved and 0.52 MTCO2E has been mitigated through annual mobile phone collection. The awareness session was hosted by Villa Rotana Dubai, and started with an input session about the importance for the earth Recycling Mobile phone by Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) team, and continued with Mr. Jawad Ali, Environment, Health and Safety Manager of Villa, Rihab and Rimal Rotana, who gave a presentation about Sustainability and Environmental issues. Speaking on the occasion, Kinan Al Ghraoui, General Manager Villa, Rihab and Rimal Rotana said: “In recognition of Earth Day, we join in encouraging our colleagues to recycle their used mobile devices. It is also our responsibility to protect our environment for generations to come. Also, this is a perfect opportunity for them to experience in firsthand a true natural environment which it is among the few urban protected areas of the world." Moreover, Villa, Rihab and Rimal Rotana will be part of the ‘Borrow a Bin’ campaign where the hotels will make use of a ‘roving’ bin for two weeks during which colleagues are encouraged to bring in their old phones of any brand for responsible recycling. After the awareness session, colleagues from the 3 hotels visited Ras Al-Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, where they learned about the importance of a natural heritage, conservation and the wise use of wetlands and its resources having an amazing learning experience and fun during their visit.
