No pain no gain for White Collar hopefuls

White Collar Boxing organiser Transguard calls for entries - ‘open day' arranged at Dubai's KO gym on 24 August to register for fight night XI in November

Following yet another highly successful White Collar fight night in June, which attracted over 700 avid fight fans, the event organiser Transguard is now preparing for its eleventh edition on 22 November 2013.

A call for entries is being made with a special ‘open day' at the appropriately named KO Gym in Dubai Marina on Saturday 24 August at 2pm, which is designed to give aspiring pugilists an insight to ‘gym life' and the commitment required to become a Fight Night contender.

According to White Collar Boxing, organiser Mark Povey over 12 eager business men and women have already applied to sign up for the intensive eight-week training programme which starts in earnest on 6 September.

“We have two real estate agents, two wealth managers, a CEO of a model agency, even an art director and an English teacher. It is also nice to have some support from three of my colleagues at Transguard, which includes a  lady from our FM accounts team,” said Povey.

“However the open day will give these (and other) boxing hopefuls a taste of what's to come should they decide to accept the White Collar challenge. All contestants have to go through an intensive physical and technical training programme before being allowed to step into the ring on fight night,” he said.

Round eleven of the bi-annual event will take place on 22 November 2013 in the Andalous Ballroom at the Habtoor Grand Hotel, Dubai. The black tie dinner offers an exciting programme of interactive entertainment, culminating in up to eight bouts under the supervision of a professional referee. The event also helps support Transguard's chosen charity, Christel House India.

The open day for applicants, will take would-be contenders through their paces under the watchful eye of professional trainer and boxing coach Zack Taumafai.

Administered by a team of sports professionals, each competitor receives professional training and coaching, with competitor safety and welfare a priority. Contestants are equally matched during the selection process to ensure a fair fight.

“White Collar Boxing was created for complete boxing novices who are prepared to push themselves to their absolute mental and physical limits and then still come back for more. These executives can then apply the same focus, discipline and values, which is essential in the ring, to their working environments, drawing whatever parallels they find appropriate,” said Povey.

White Collar Boxing originated in Gleasons Gym, New York, in 1988. The first contest was held between Dr Richard Novak, an attorney and veterinarian, and Dr David Lawrence who held a PhD in English literature. After the contest the two went to dinner to celebrate the birth of a new sport.
