- 2017 theme for the conference - International Response to Global Conflict
- Over 1,000 students from 45 different schools around the world participate in the only THIMUN affiliated conference in the UAE
Dubai, 16 March 2017: DIAMUN 2017 - the Dubai International Academy’s (DIA) Model United Nations, an annual event, begins today. The conference will host over 1,000 student participants from 45 different schools around the world, discussing pressing global issues centred around ‘International Response to Global Conflict”. The four-day conference event will take place at the American University in Dubai and Dubai International Academy. Solely a student led effort, the conference will address a variety of modern day, highly relevant issues prevalent in today’s world such as government intervention and responsibility in cyber sovereignty and Internet censorship. Students are encouraged to cultivate confidence and leadership skills through the experience. Model UN conferences are opportunities to practice research, public speaking, teamwork, negotiation, and writing skills in a safe and structured environment. Over the years, DIA’s students who have held designations as Secretary General (SG) and Executive team members of DIAMUN have gone on to joining the world’s top universities such as Yale, Cambridge, Princeton, Stanford, London School of Economics, UPenn, Wharton School of Business, University of Michigan, McGill. DIAMUN, now in its 9th year of existence, is a platform for students to discuss world topics and generate resolutions (comparable to the legal documentation developed by the UN) on thought-provoking topics. The conference enables students to enter a life-like simulation of conferences held at the UN, enhancing students’ critical skills and international understanding. Poonam Bhojani, CEO of Innoventures Education, said: “We are very pleased to host yet another thought-provoking DIAMUN conference in Dubai. Over the years, we have witnessed the conference grow as it raises the benchmark for international discourse. Students are placed in settings that require evaluation and analysis of complex world issues, be it on a micro or macro level, and in turn need to develop plausible solutions to address these issues. Through initiatives such as DIAMUN, we are confident that we are developing future leaders and diplomats, and are extremely proud of our students and of students from participating schools.” The Dubai International Academy Model United Nations is the only THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations) affiliated conference in the UAE. The first THIMUN conference was held in 1968 and has now set the standard for Model United Nations conferences- DIAMUN being one of the conferences receiving the prestigious affiliation.
