Being Eco friendly- Planting more trees ARTICLE BY NITYASHRI SANKARAN, GRADE 7F, DELHI PRIVATE SCHOOL, SHARJAH It was a pleasure to participate in the tree plantation event “For Our Emirates We plant” conducted by the Emirates environmental group at the Masafi Friday Market, Fujairah on 16th Feb 2016 as part of a growing movement of planting indigenous trees to ensure the expansion of the sustainable green patch in the UAE. I was able to qualify to plant 7 trees in my name and in the name of my family members through my recycling efforts as part of the neighborhood recycling project. I collected recyclables like plastic bottles, paper, cans and toners from my neighbours and friends and submitted for recycling with effective use of my summer vacations, and was offered an opportunity to participate in the event. The event saw a gathering of students, parents and corporates of various countries and ages and planting several hundreds of saplings which will be irrigated and maintained by the Fujairah municipality and it would be heartening to see some grown plants and trees in the next few years in this area. In order to maintain the ecosystem and prevent extinction of species, the first step is responsible consumption and supporting reforestation. It is said that “the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now”. We should do our best to reduce cutting of trees, conserve natural resources by diligent consumption of water, energy, fuels. The trees utilize the Carbon dioxide released by us and in turn they provide us Oxygen which keeps us lively, healthy and active. Different particles like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are getting also filtered. The roots of the trees hold the soil firmly and prevent soil erosion. This leads to the increase in the ground water level and the continuity of water cycle gets balanced resulting in good rains. Ultimately trees prevent the drought and provide greenery to the environment. Having lots of trees in your society will help you have fresh air for you and your kids, maintain good health, and with a beautiful green society you can inspire others to follow the track and save the city and environment. Environment is a place where humans as well as plants and animals live. Keeping it clean and neat is our responsibility. It is vital to spread awareness on afforestation, appreciate and understand that we depend on nature and ecosystem services to provide us a secure and healthy living. The international conventions like UN convention on biological diversity, World heritage convention and convention on international trade in endangered species are some steps in controlling extinction and preserving biodiversity. I am very happy on my attempt to promote a greener earth through EEG., and would motivate all my friends and fellow mates to practice recycling and conservation of greenery in daily life.
