International Yoga day on June 21st at Al Wasl Football club in Dubai

International Yoga Day, June 21, was declared by the Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi in the United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014. He asked the world leaders to adopt an International Yoga Day, saying that by changing lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Yoga is “an invaluable gift of our ancient tradition”, he said: “It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.”

The Dubai event, aimed to introduce yoga as a sport celebrated this milestone with an astounding count of about 17,000 people of all ages and nationalities attending the session held at the Al Nasr Football club in Dubai led by Indian yoga teacher A G Mohan, who has spent decades studying with the late Tirumalai Krishamacharya, known as the “Father of Modern Yoga”.

It was hosted by the Indian consulate in Dubai with Mr. Anurag Bhushan giving the inaugural speech and a free yoga gathering presided over by Indian Olympic medallist boxer Mary Kom and Major General Nasser Al Sayed Abdulrazak Al Razooqi, the president of the UAE Karate and Taekwondo Federation and a member of the UAE National Olympic Committee. Several children from various schools actively participated in the event. Yoga is now part of the schools curriculum to inculcate a holistic approach to health and well being.

More than 170 countries, including the UAE, the US, Canada, China and Saudi Arabia have successfully commemorated this day, and proud to have been part of the student community who participated in the event and that UAE has taken a giant step forward towards Yoga as a way of daily life.
