UAE cyber security in the spotlight as Dubai hosts flagship technology conference

Dubai, UAE, November 9, 2016:  Against the backdrop of the UAE been found to be the second most targeted nation for cyber-attacks across the United States, the issue of cyber security is taking centre-stage at a major international conference being hosted in Dubai.

In partnership with Canadian University Dubai (CUD), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Computer Society, began its 41st Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN) at The Address Hotel, Dubai Mall on November 7.

The Conference brings together eminent academics from all around the world to discuss some of the most cutting edge research topics that have tangible consequences for everyday life, from social media privacy to the next generation of mobile technology.  Major advances, from high-speed networks to the global Internet, have been reported at past LCN conferences.

Among the keynote speakers is Dr. Marc Dacier, Principal Scientist for the Cybersecurity Group of the Qatar Computing Research Institute & HBKU, based in Doha, who will take the stage on day three to discuss what is now considered to be one of the biggest boardroom concerns.

With the UAE leading the way through the launch of a joint venture to establish the first of its kind cyber security centre, Dr. Dacier’s reflection on the past, present and future of Internet security was expected to provide insights on how to harness emerging technologies for cyber safety.

In his remarks during the official opening of the Conference, University Chancellor, Mr. Buti Saeed Al Ghandi, reflected on the significance of the gathering of over 200 leading scientists in Dubai. He said, “The UAE is not only a perfect meeting point for academics from across the globe to engage in intellectual discourse; it is a country that actively seeks to harness much of the research and technological development that will be explored throughout this conference.  Canadian University Dubai takes pride in it contribution to this agenda through the hosting of this conference. ”

Delegates went on to hear from keynote speaker, Prof. Dr. Adam Wolisz, of Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, who discussed the increasing role of wireless technology and the questions surrounding adaptive management systems in local networks. The evening session celebrated the conference contributors with an award ceremony and gala dinner, with entertainment provided by Dubai Tourism Al Yola dance group.

The gala saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between CUD and the Society of Engineers UAE, to collaborate on education and research initiatives in the field of engineering. It is also anticipated that the Conference will build upon the recent partnership CUD has established with leading Canadian institution, Queen’s University, to promote transfer and collaboration in engineering education between the UAE and Canada.
