Weaving the fabric of life for 125 years true to tradition, but perfect for a modern home Sedar Global Interiors Creative Director Nahel Selo gives his top tips on how to create memorable interiors and ambience for the Holy Month

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 31, 2020:    Among many homes across the region, this spiritual month is a time for remembering and reviving traditional routines. It is also the season to spend quality time in the home with loved ones. Providing the perfect go-to to refresh your home décor into a very festive Ramadan look and feel. Sedar Global’s array of textiles and mix of classic and contemporary designs offer the perfect go-to revive your interiors creating an inviting space this holy month. Create memorable moments with loved ones amidst a serene setting that reminds you to slow down the pace and spend more time reconnecting at home.

From reimagining the Majlis deeply entrenched in Arabic tradition, to customising floor and throw pillows, made to fit curtains or drapes and wallcoverings for the home, Sedar Global’s Creative Director Nahel Selo revisits design touches from collections including; Missoni Home, Versace Home collection, Armani/Casa, Fujikawa. Marco Polo, Somfy, Amazona, Jannelli & Volpi and York Weave as well as the Swarovski.

Tip 1 – Play with Textures
For an update to the conventional majlis look back to the minimalism of Bedouin life. Step away from elaborate or ornate materials and instead focus on adding depth and warmth through playing with contrasting textiles and textures mixed with subtle metallic finishes or accessories. Creative Director Nahel Selo comments “avoid leathers and stick to Arabian geometric patterned throws, rugs or pillows, using contrasting fabrics and panels of very lightly patterned wallpaper, this acts a nice break to block colours used for seating”

Tip 2 – Space Division
True to the heritage of a Majlis there should be creative space division so that if you have formal, low-seating arrangements in a certain area adding elements such as ottoman or poufs can create more of a circular and social environment for the family. Creative Director Nahel Selo comments “adding seating style pillows is the quickest way to reinvent a Majlis, at Sedar we can customise oversized pillows mixed with accompanying medium and smaller styles in different shapes and fabrics to complete a comfortable and inviting look.”

Tip 3 – Go For Gold

For a memorable Iftar, mix up interiors with traditional flashes of gold or brass contrasted with turquoise, royal blues or dusky pinks, this can be through wallpaper panels, threads and details used for pillows and drapes. Or to create a show stopping table setting even the cutlery or table accessories. Work with mirrors, reflective surfaces and lights to illuminate your gold hues and produce a special ambience. Creative Director Nahel Selo comments “adding metallics, specifically gold and brass is not only a nod to tradition but also essential to create the festive mood, for 2020 work with worn away brass or golds to give an earthy and contemporary finish.”

Tip 4 – Rustic, Khaleeji or Moroccan inspired Interiors
For a more organic and modern majlis reflecting the city and desert scape of Dubai, take a more rustic approach and work with muted tones and earthy colours using natural fabrics in terracotta and sandy whites. Paired with the richness of fading gold or brass, weathered wood and plants. For a classic Khaleeji creation, keep subtle influences inspired by Islamic and Levantine architecture and with materials such as silk, brocade, including classic embroidery designs. Or for a modern Moroccan inspired majlis interlacing Arab, Mediterranean and African motifs work in bright but harmonious shades of deep blues, red, purples and emerald greens which are not traditionally used for the majlis.

Creative Director Nahel Selo comments 'Don't be afraid to experiment and enliven solid coloured seating with an eclectic mix-and-match between these looks and feels. Once a colour palette has been decided we can be playful in balancing local art, rugs, textures, curtain fabrics, drapes, wallpaper panels and curated accessories to create a special entertaining space to celebrate the joy of Ramadan.'
