New study at the Univeristy of Loughbourgh indicates O.R.S hydration tablets provide superior hydration compared to energy drinks

Dubai, UAE, 24 July 2017:  A new landmark study by the University of Loughbourgh suggests that O.R.S Hydration Tablets are a lot more effective than energy drinks and other beverages. The study investigated the effects of 13 different commonly consumed drinks such as iced tea, coffee, cola and orange juice among others on urine output and fluid balance when ingested in a euhydrated state. The aim of the study was to establish a beverage hydration index (BHI), the volume of urine produced after drinking expressed relative to a standard treatment (still water) for each beverage. The results displayed that the water retention capacity of the energy drinks and other beverages was lesser as compared to O.R.S Hydration Tablets.

“Energy drinks and other beverages are stress-busters and preferred for instant energy. However, the repercussions of such drinks in the long-run are life-threatening,” said Arsalan Karim, Director, Research and Development, Clinova Ltd.

A study suggests that drinking one 32 ounce can of a commercially available energy drink results in profound changes in the heart's electrical activity and blood pressure which can lead to serious health problems.

Energy drinks belong to amorphous category. They are a hybrid of lifestyle beverages and functional beverages. Like other soft drinks, they provide refreshment and flavor at meals, between meals, whenever. The typical energy drink contains significantly more carbohydrate and calories and is made of functional ingredients—mainly caffeine—to provide instant energy whenever needed. In addition, many energy drinks are also carbonated, further increasing the associated risk of health distress.

Rising health concerns over energy drinks have flattened the growth of the industry. In many parts of the UAE, these energy drinks are banned with authorities imposing fines for shops selling energy drinks to persons below 18 years of age.

“Energy drinks have numerous side-effects. Switching to healthier options as O.R.S. tablets not only keeps the body hydrated, but also healthy and safe,”added Arsalan Karim.

Clinova’s O.R.S. Tablets are a ground-breaking, balanced formula of glucose, electrolytes and minerals which when added to water help maintain optimal hydration. They are designed to counter the effects of hyperthermia, optimise specific bodily functions and enhance endurance performance.

“In the UAE, hot conditions can lead to water loss. O.R.S. Tablets are rich in electrolytes and minerals and help your body function smoothly by replacing the lost fluids. These hydration tablets should be taken at regular intervals to avoid water loss. It is important to remember that consistent replenishment of electrolytes is just as important as the fuel you consume and the water you drink,” concluded Arsalan Karim.

The UAE is likely to introduce excise tax ranging from 50 per cent and 100 per cent on import, production and sale of energy drinks. Last year, the World Health Organisation also urged countries to introduce sugary tax to curb soaring obesity rates, particularly in children.
