Works by 58 artists from 29 countries will be on display in the 10th edition of the exhibition from June 18

Dubai, UAE – June 20, 2019 | Tashkeel, Dubai’s leading centre for homegrown art and design, will celebrate the 10th edition of its annual summer exhibition with a display of diverse works that represent the breadth and depth of the artistic practice happening now in the UAE.

Made in Tashkeel will showcase more than 100 works by 58 UAE-based artists from 29 different countries this year. The individual pieces and series of artworks on display have been created by members, workshop participants, instructors, staff and existing members in the last 12 months. They explore myriad themes, such as the human condition, evolving UAE society, a satirical take on modern food culture, and spiritual liberation.

Lisa Ball-Lechgar, Deputy Director of Tashkeel, said: “Made in Tashkeel plays a pivotal role in opening avenues for our growing community of promising artists and designers. The format of the exhibition enables practitioners from various artistic disciplines to present their distinct and novel works, most of which were created in our multidisciplinary studios and workspaces.”

“We are particularly proud of this year’s edition as we have the highest number of artists from more than 29 countries participating, making this our most diverse summer showcase yet.”

Spanning a wide range of disciplines, the works take many forms, including photography (analogue and digital), mixed media, textiles, screen printing, sculpture, projection, calligraphy, painting, jewellery, and woodcuts. Each individual has been part of the Tashkeel journey, whether as a member, instructor, artist-in-residence or participant in a solo or group show. Selected works will be available for sale, starting from AED 350.

Exhibitors this year include Analog Photography in the UAE group member Anna Shtraus’s ‘Driving in the Rain’ photograph shot in Sharjah and printed on Tashkeel’s Epson digital printers using museum-grade paper and inks; architect and illustrator Ruba Al Araji’s ‘Temporary Memory’ screenprinted using fluorescent inks and multiple layers on the vacuum bed; multi-disciplinary artist Gosia Van Unen’s ‘Back to Square One’ made with cotton thread on perforated acrylic panel and fashion designer Kay Li’s ‘Shadow’, a textile art piece combining textile smocking and metallic foiling techniques on translucent fabrics. Other participants include Alexandra Troy, Alia Damithan, Maitha Damithan and Hind Bin Damithan Al Qemzi, Aravindan Madhu, Banu Çolak, Elizabeth Dorazio, Géraldine Chansard, Hanna Orlowski-Gouveia, Ichraq Bouzidi, Joanna Barakat, Khaled Al Shaer, Kim Robertson and Christopher Osborne & Lia Staehlin.

Participating artists Elham Shafaei and Khalid Mezaina will also be running workshops during Tashkeel’s 2019 Children’s Summer Camp, which is on from July 7 to 18.

Made in Tashkeel 2018 runs from Tuesday, June 18 until August 29 at Tashkeel Studio and Gallery, Nad Al Sheba 1, Dubai. The centre opens from 10am to 10pm every day except Friday, and admission is free of charge. Tours are available upon request.
