Dubai, UAE, June 15, 2016: Do Son was directly inspired by Yves Coueslant's memories of his childhood in Vietnam. Yves is one of diptyque's three founding partners and this fragrance exquisitely conveys the emotions that fueled his memories.
Tonkin in the 1930s - a land of misty air, endless marshes and steamy summers, where the lush Red River delta emerges from the vast herb gardens and rice fields that feed Hanoi, surrounded by majestic mountains.
Yves grew up in Haiphong, northern Indochina's main seaport, where his father, an attorney passionately in love with China, set up business. His mother, who had trouble dealing with the moist climate, often retreated to the cool shadows of her little den. She enjoyed the slightly bitter accents of tuberose and shopping at the big stores in the city to bring home the latest novelties from Paris. At times, the humidity in Haiphong grew too intense, so Yves's father had a seaside pagoda built in Do Son. Access was via a footpath that ran along the shore of purple water tinted by the Red River's iron-laden silt. Just beyond, Halong Bay sparkled with some three thousand little isles.A refreshing breeze often danced through the porch, blending his mother's perfume with the scent of sea air and the fragrances of the flowers allaround.
Today, it allremains. Although the city has grown and their house hasbecome ahotel, the pagoda in Do Son and the railing along the footpath are still there. The
evening breezes still carry the mysterious fragrances, the slow shifting wake of flowers and sea foam come together when the sun sets at the end of each day.
Getaway at the flower market
Going to the flower market was always a favorite pastime for Yves and his mother, and awonderful way to escape the heat of the city.
The rainbow of stalls was always brimming with blooms skillfully nurtured and harvested by the Dang Hai villagers. Daisies, gerberas and gladioli vied with lilies, roses and violets for the freshest fragrance and beauty queen prize. Tuberoses, dedicated for worship, were cut in branches , alone or with jasmine and ylang-ylang, and wrapped in large canna leaves for offerings.
After dark, Yves and his mother would head home, their arms loaded with bouquets steeped in water to refresh their Do Son pagoda.
Do Son is a fragrance flush with contrasts and freshness. It breathes the heady, full-bodied scent of the majestic tuberose. An Indian variation, chosen for its bright green, spicy facets that infuse a fresh, natural plant aura, as if still on thevine.
