‘Chimney Cakes' Popularized by Turkish TV Show – Kuney Guzey – Prove to be Well Received at Global Village

A popular snack that has been consistently referenced in the popular Turkish TV show, Kuney Guzey, is loved by visitors to Global Village during the Dubai Food Festival

Dubai, 2 March, 2014: Global Village, Dubai’s leading family entertainment and cultural destination, has brought the greatest of culinary delights for visitors to enjoy during the Dubai Food Festival. With 170 kiosks around Global Village to choose from, visitors will have a fantastic chance to try snack foods from all over the world. One of these may very well be the Hungarian snack food Kurtoskalacs - the popular pastry that has been introduced to Global Village by a Turkish café called Makara Café.

The Kurtoskalacs gained popularity through the Turkish TV show Kuney Guzey - where it was well known as a ‘chimney cake’ - with many of the episodes that featuring it being shown on a TV at the Makara Café kiosk.

The word ‘makara’ refers to the rolling method used to create these incredibly unique pastries. Traditionally served at celebrations as a sweet for people to eat, Makara Café has taken to creating new flavours for everybody to love at any time of the day. This Turkish Café has taken a traditional pastry and turned it into a modern day delight with the three different flavours it has on offer.

The classic sweet Kurtoskalacs is a great dessert to have. The cinnamon and sugar that lines the outside of the dough caramelises and adds a lovely crunchy quality to this pastry. The inside of the Kurtoskalac is then coated with chocolate spread, and just to add that little bit more decadence to the food sprinkles and nuts can be sprinkled on it. Visitors to this kiosk will also be able to have their pastry in the shape of a cone so that they can enjoy it with ice cream.

Those without a sweet tooth can try out the savoury version of the Kurtoskalacs which is a wonderful cheesy treat. The dough is made slightly saltier and olives are added for extra flavour, and once it has been rolled around the baking roller it is coated in zaater, salt, black and white sesame seeds, and a special cheese. Once it has been baked for five minutes the Kurtoskalacs has cheese spread on it and it is ready to eat, straight out of the oven.

The ‘Flavours of the World’ at Global Village has given visitors a chance to sample some the finest treats from around the world, with the cuisines of over 65 nationalities being served up to UAE residents and tourists alike. This allows Dubai to show the world that it is an emerging gastronomy destination, and focuses the world’s eyes on the tourism and hospitality industry of Dubai.
