United Arab Emirates, Dubai, July 17, 2013: The Dubai Health Authority will hold its second live twitter clinic from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. tomorrow to address queries on fasting and diabetes.
This is the second weekly clinic that the authority is holding during the holy month of Ramadan.
The aim of this initiative is to provide a platform for people who are fasting to raise their queries with regard to health and have immediate responses from experts.
This week's topic was selected given the high prevalence of diabetes in the UAE. Dr Muhammad Farooqi, endocrinologist and director of the Dubai Diabetes Centre said: “It is estimated that roughly one out of five people in the UAE have diabetes. It is essential that diabetics who wish to fast, must seek approval from their healthcare provider and visit them if they experience any discomfort while fasting.
“Diabetics can experience abnormally high or low blood glucose levels if they fast without the advice of their doctors. Diabetics on insulin need to be particularly careful and check adjust their insulin dosage as per the healthcare provider's advice.”
He said fasting is particularly tougher for those with diabetes as they need to ensure they consume their medications on time, keep a track on their sugar levels and eat healthy foods.
He said: “Overindulgence and a lack of physical activity are among the main problems that diabetics must counter while fasting. We advice diabetics to eat proper meals that are adequate in all nutrients and follow some sort of light exercises, especially after breaking their fast.”
Taraweeh, the daily prayers conducted especially during Ramadan, could be counted as exercise, he said.
He also added that diabetics should check their sugar levels regularly so that they are aware if they need to break their fast. “They should keep a sugar source handy because they many need to break their fast incase they experience low blood glucose levels.”
He said several restaurants have healthy options for iftars and many have diabetes-friendly menu. “Diabetics need to be very careful especially when eating out and they should avoid fried and sugary foods.
He also said that diabetics should never skip their suhoor and eat in moderation during Iftar.
